** INTRODUCING LIEGH HEGEDUS
Liegh Hegedus will be training to become Assistant and then Manager of our "Human and Otherwise Resources". Her first task is to gather and organize information on everyone in the Sime~Gen Staff.

We have seriously outgrown our start-up method of keeping track of everyone.

We are going to be creating a Personnel department out of the various chores that have been handled in a piecemeal fashion up 'til now.

** PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITY
Original essays are invited for a collection tentatively entitled THE SLASH READER: FAN COMMUNITIES AND FICTIONS OF DESIRE. The purpose of this book is to explore the cultural significance of slash fiction from a variety of scholarly approaches and perspectives. Ideally, this collection will be a comprehensive introductory textbook that explores the critical intersection between media fandom and desire and will be suitable for use at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Possible Topics include the boundaries of consumption and production, the politics of representation, and the fluidity of desire. Critical comparisons of fan fiction from POKEMON to KNIGHT RIDER, to STAR TREK are also encouraged. Submissions that explore the sexual identities of the characters as well as those of the creators are also anticipated. Papers that deal with the inner workings of the slash writing community, as well as those that explore the boundaries between slash writers and the larger fan communities are welcomed, too.

Studies of Gender, Race, Ethnicity, Class, Sexuality, Media, and Desire are encouraged. Any number of methodological approaches are appropriate and not limited to: Performance Studies, Feminism, Sociology, Literary Analysis, Anthropology, Ethnography, Culture Studies, Historical Analysis, Psychology, Queer Theory, Folklore, etc.

Please submit 2-page proposals or completed manuscripts (MLA style, 15-25 pages in length) to:

** READ A GOOD STORY, DO A GOOD DEED
Exciting new art and stories await you in the SimeCenter.

We have two new recipients this month:
- Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society - Pentagon Fund aid to families of victims of the Pentagon attack and also those involved in Operation Enduring Freedom
- The Robin Hood Foundation - Robin Hood Relief Fund coordinating and assisting NYC charities in recovery efforts in the wake of the WTC disaster

I hope you will take the time to visit their pages, and donate to these worthy organizations, by way of thanking them for their efforts...and in return for enjoying the excellent stories and artwork our contributors have donated.

...Don't forget to tell them that you were 'referred' by SimeCenter.

---

In the Art department, there are two fantasy images by Geoffrey Chew. (This artist joined our group of talented contributors last month. And I saw one of these images last month, but I hoarded it until now.) Both works feature pyramids, and being a closet Egyptian, I adore them both.

---

Our first story is "Lottery" by Lillian Caldwell. It presents an innovative approach to fiscal responsibility in a small town. (This author not only writes engaging fictional works, but also has made a name for herself in non-fiction. Her "Teenagers! A Bewildered Parent's Guide" is becoming a classic in the study of family values and teen behavior.)

Our second story...Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of a serial killer as she plies her trade? Of course, you have! Here's your chance to find out: "Portrait of a Murderess" by Stephanie Burke. (This author and artist is one of our resident authors on SimeGen.com. This is her first contribution to SimeCenter...I hope it won't be the last. See her website at: <http://www.simegen.com/romance/1006 > [created and maintained by Carol Castellanos, of our staff...shameless plug].)

---

Please visit SimeCenter to enjoy these offerings, and make donations to our 'Special Edition' recipients.
