Madeline Smith 's secluded rustic home is haunted, she thinks, but is Jon Barnett a ghost or what? His repeated appearances and pleas for her help and his warning about her nephew frightens her, but she still phones her sister for reassurance that her nephew is safe. Instead of dawn bringing her peace, though, she receives a desperate call from her sister that her nephew is gone - vanished!

Maddie fights against her sense that she must get involved. Her psychic “gifts” have caused her nothing but grief and harassment since she was a small child. Her family, anyone who knows her, shies away from her, mistrusting and fearing her ability to see things no one else can. She keeps hidden her ability to summon and unleash fire, frightened that this would subject her to even more painful ostracism.

Maddie had steeled herself to ignore Jon's pleas, but her nephew's disappearance leads her to a psychic vision that Jon's predicament and the vanishing teenager were related. Driving through the night, she arrives at the village that Jon's spectre had told her was the site of these horrifying events.

Struggling to control her own fears and psychic premonitions, Maddie becomes involved in a terrifying world of shapeshifters and ancient evil.

Keri Arthur kept me glued to the story. I left it unwillingly and hastened back to follow the unfolding tale. The pure evil confronting Maddie forced her to trust a man, which was against her most heart-felt belief. How she overcame her years of abuse and learned to control her psychic ability makes for a powerful story woven with the realization by Jon and Maddie that they are connected by deeper feelings than their different unseen abilities.

These are real people faced with unreal problems and you quickly care about them. How they achieve their goals is a fascinating , twisting story.
