WHISTLING SHADE, the St. Paul literary journal, is doing a Sci-fi issue this summer. We have a print circulation of about 2000, in addition to a web page (http://www.whistlingshade.com ); and for the Sci-fi issue we're paying $20 per story.

Reprints are okay if author holds copyright. For length, anything from 1000 words to 10,000.

In terms of audience, we distribute WHISTLING SHADE mostly at cafes, local bookstores, and libraries; and most of our readers are young and into the music & art scene. For style, we prefer impressionistic stories that make one think or solid action & romance.

Submissions can be sent to editor@whistlingshade.com or by snail mail to -

Deadline for submissions is June 15.

** WRITER'S CONTEST
**NOVELBOOKS, INC PRESENTS A CONTEST FOR ALL SCIENCE FICTION WRITERS ~ ASPIRING AND PUBLISHED!

Are you a fan of Jack Williamson, E.E. 'Doc' Smith, A.E. Van Vogt, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and other great Golden Age science fiction writers? Do you have a fantastic idea for a rousing, exciting, adventurous sf short story? Or perhaps a thoughtful, intuitive, contemplative story about mankind's first contact with other intelligent life forms?

Then our new contest might be just up your space station.

That's right: space station. Our contest is for the best science fiction short story set in/around/on/near a space station.

Here are the guidelines:

1. The setting must be on/in/near a space station.

2. The station does not have to be orbiting our own Earth or be in our solar system.

3. No copyrighted worlds [for example, Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5].

4. No gratuitous sex. While romance is acceptable, we're not looking for porn, and will return any submission at once if our judges consider the story so.

5. 5K words or less.

The top three winners will receive cash prizes [$100 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd, $50 for 3rd], certificates of merit, and publication in print and electronic formats in the next NBI contest anthology-- and the top scoring story with be the title of the anthology. The ten honorable mentions receive publication in both formats of the anthology, certificates of merit, and selected prizes from our NBI Cyber Shop with the anthology cover art.

Visit http://www.novelbooksinc.com/sscontest.html for all the details!

Submissions will be accepted May 1 through midnight, July 15. However, the total number of entries is limited to 60, so the cut off date is subject to change.

Projected publication date [tentative at present] for the anthology is Halloween, 2002.

For more information, contact: gail@novelbooksinc.com.

** CALL FOR ART
A COMPANION IN ZEOR (CZ) #13 now has plans to go to PAPER. It's up on the web right now at http://www.simegen.com/sgfandom/rimonslibrary/cz .

We need filler and cover art.

Depending on what this prints out to on paper, we may be moving stories around from one zine issue to another. From 13 to 14, and vice-versa. The goal is to get about 100 pages in paper.

Deadline for art submissions -- SEPTEMBER 15, with a release date later than that.

Eventually, everything used in this issue will end up on the web.

See if there's a specific piece or pieces you wish to illustrate... and the COVER is necessary. The paper issue will be 8 1/2 by 11, with blue heavyweight stock for the cover -- which has been traditional for CZ -- though it can easily be changed to accommodate white paper.

In the printed zine, the illustrations will be black and white. For the website, they can be in color. Though color illustrations don't usually "translate" well from the web to paper, we can try it that way rather than the submission of two sets of illustrations.

If anyone has potential possibilities for my consideration, please get in touch with me before sending. I do NOT have a scanner, though other friends do.
