Workshop:Possible Publishing Markets
by
Karen MacLeod

KAREN MACLEOD was an Editor for Novel Books, Inc., is currently a freelance editor, and Editorial Consultant for Sime~Gen, Inc.

This compilation of possible publishing markets (compiled January, 2005) includes a bit of "sage advice" from Australian author, Rob McCubbin. His book, Written in Sand was the last novel I edited for NBI.

Rob's Advice
I had an English teacher (year 11, Box Hill Boys' High School) who said:
"You have to grab them (by the ......) in the first paragraph."
"Catapult them into the action from the first sentence."
"Make them live the part."
"Up-close first to grab them, then set the scene if necessary."
"Don't describe non-essentials.... leave room for imagination."
and so on.....
He was the one who persuaded me that I could write.
And I try to follow his ideas... they seem to work for me.
Maybe someone should send this lass (an author we were talking about) a similar list?

Maybe I should run some writing classes???
Rob

I'd keep Rob's advice in mind when crafting your manuscripts, synopsis, and cover letters.

Here's a list of publishers, that is by no means complete, nor are the links active, as publishers come and go. You must investigate each fully for yourself.

Additional information for markets and publishers may be found in my other lessons. From America On Line chats. TOPIC: Advice about researching Publishers for submitting your work. This information is in two parts, although the lists there are older than this one.

HOMEWORK: Practice creating submission packets for a publisher. Search for publisher's guidelines, and investigate which possible publishers may take submissions in the genre you write.
