It Could Be Worse

My leg is gone. I know it has to be gone because it's the only thing that doesn't hurt.

I was on the north meridian checking the moorings when the scaffolding gave way. No warning, no time to prepare. I was falling head first. I scrambled around for something, anything to stop my fall. There was nothing to grab onto just the empty air.

I looked up to where the north meridian intersected the wall, it was still connected. I had attached my tether line to it. I waited for the line to snap tight and stop me. It never got the chance.

The sound of my leg tearing away as it caught in the twisted scaffolding was terrifying. I felt the crunch of it as much as heard it. The wave after wave of pain made me scream.

I don't remember hitting the ground.

There isn't anyone to help me. This is my territory, my responsibility, my livelihood. I have to get up. I roll over slowly. The pain tears holes in my consciousness.

Everything hurts! I suppose I should be grateful to be alive. I would be if I wasn't so convinced that dead wouldn't hurt as much.

I can't bring myself to look at the place where my leg used to be. I know I'm bleeding, looking won't stop it. I feel pretty light headed. I must have lost a lot of blood. If I pass out again that will probably be the end of me. I have to get up!

I hurt, but I'm up. I crawl back towards the collapsed scaffolding. I know I'm trailing blood but I can feel the flow diminishing. It could be worse. After all I do have seven legs left.
