one of our professional writers in residence. "I have a non-stick frying pan
that I've used for over 30 years. It can be scrubbed with a stainless steel
scrubbie. You can use metal utensils on it. I usually use it with just a bit of
PAM or equivalent (I prefer Trader Joe's Olive Oil spray). It is still non-stick
after all these years. So, despite the price: $45 with free Amazon shipping, I
highly recommend it.

You can still buy 2 MP (2 Megapixel) cameras, but this is the
latest in resolution. I have a friend who has a Canon
Powershot.
She brought it over, plugged it into my computer and presto -- no fuss, muss
or bother, we had pictures ready to post to the internet. Now why
would a writer need that?
I have a freelance journalist friend who gets paid to supply photos with her
stories. I have another friend who manipulates photo-images to make
backgrounds and other fancy decorations for websites.
A writer needs tools that just work -- no fuss.

Here is a real "find" for the impecunious writer.
They now make LASER printers in B&W cheaper than the old dot-matrix
printers and not much more expensive than the absolutely forbidden ink-jet
printers. This is a chintzy machine, but goshwow for the money, a
writer's dream!
A writer's hardcopy backup or submission draft must not have ink that can
smear or run or transfer to other objects. In a publisher's production
environment, smearing a page could knock your book out of the publishing
slot and ruin all the publicity buildup.
Publishers who still use paper demand non-smear copy -- and now you can
afford it!
Read the reviews
of this machine on amazon -- take a moment to compare to the reviews of
the Hewlett Packard (used to be best) machines. This Konica Milolta
Page Pro B&W has a good price, doesn't jam, has 1200X1200 resolution --
isn't fast at 17ppm, (half an hour for 500 pages), but will do the job until
you can afford a thousand dollar color printer.
ADVICE: Get a laser printer. Be sure it does not use a cartridge
you can only buy from the manufacturer. Check www.quill.com
for remanufactured cartridges. You want better than 600X600
resolution. You need smooth non-jam feeding. BEWARE: the
cheapest quietest machines have no FAN and will overheat and quit after 50
pages or so. Read the reviews on amazon and learn
printers.

I have a DVR rented from my cable system that
accesses an online menu to program it -- a competitor to Tivo -- just to
see if I like DVR. There are a number of reasons you may not want
to go with the TiVo brand yet, so read about
this on amazon. But I love my DVR TV programming system though
it's too small, holding less than 20 hours of programming
when it's rated for 50.
This DVR-online-programming concept is one huge time-saver. You
can get through all your TV programs and have loads of time left over
for reading!
