SHAPESHIFTER,   MYSTERY   FANTASY   VAMPIRE

SHAPESHIFTER:

Gargoyle Tears   GARGOYLE TEARS
JV HARLEE
TARBUTON PRESS
March 2002

Shapeshifter, Young Adult

This is the typical story of a teenager uprooted by his parents and moved to another town. However, this story is far from typical. For this teenager and his mother are Gargoyles. Ethan is now sixteen and finding out bit by bit about his kind. His begins with the sudden horrible smell clinging to his body. This is when he is informed each time one of their kind dies they all emit that horrible odor.

From here on this is where life takes a very unusual turn for Ethan. Someone has started killing gargoyles for no apparent reason, but to kill them. Evidently there is a human that has found out about their kind and doesn’t like it much. During all the upset and mystery Ethan meets Jane another gargoyle. He is instantly infatuated with her and thus the story goes.

I think this is a great book for any older child. I enjoyed it and would let any of my children read it. I especially liked the beginning and endings additions to the books. In the beginning you get a small write up of what gargoyles are and other things. At the end of the story is a gargoyle dictionary. I feel this is very useful to any young adult.

MYSTERY:

 NIGHT CRIMES
JUDITH WOOLCOCK COLOMBO
AMERICA HOUSE
2000

Mystery, Suspense

The derelicts of New York are turning up dead with a smile on their faces. The word on the street is that the Angel of Death is taking souls, but he’s only accepting those who wish to die. The police are stumped as to who this Angel of Death is and why he is killing these people. The one thing they do know is that this so called Angel is only a warped human being who thinks he is helping those he kills. It seems this person really does care as the people are dieing with a full belly, a good bottle of booze and a warm coat or blanket around them. But who is this person and why is he killing? Of course in truth the police don’t truly care why so much as who he is and that he’s caught and put away for what he’s doing.

As if this isn’t enough Sergeant Tony Bello must now deal with a paranoid wife. Lara, Tony’s wife has the strange idea that someone has been following her home from school. Lara is an art teacher and more than once she’s been getting the creepy feeling someone around somewhere is watching her.

It doesn’t take long for Tony to find out Lara is right. Someone wants her and wants her bad. Lara leaves town to get away from it all, but the follower goes too. Then the follower is killed however evidently he isn’t the only one after Lara. So, who else is after her? Why she isn’t famous as an artist, most students don’t want there are teacher dead and there are no criminals Tony has arrested that would go after her as revenge. Thus we are brought back to the mystery of who’s after Lara? This is only one of the mysteries in this book.

We have the question of who is this Angel of Death and what is his connection to Lara’s son? There are a lot of twists turns and surprises in this book. There are at least three simultaneous plots in this book. It was interesting to read how the author intertwined the stories of the characters and tied them together.

FANTASY:

ASHES AND ANGEL WINGS: DEMON THE FALLEN
BOOK ONE OF TRILOGY OF THE FALLEN
GREG STOLZE
WHITE WOLF PUBLISHING
MARCH 2003

Fantasy- Angels and Demons

This is the first book to the trilogy.

In book one we are introduced to the beginning of what could very well become the end. Demons and fallen angels have managed to escape from hell and are now wracking havoc on earth. Many of the demons that have managed to escape and make their way to the earthly realm have somehow become trapped in human bodies. Which human bodies may have been by design, however most were purely by chance. Many of the escaped demons are being commanded by others still trapped in hell. These demons and fallen must obey those who command them since they have the one thing that holds ultimate power over them. Any who know their true name, practically owns that demon or fallen angel. Since these demons don’t want to be called back to hell they server their master while at the same time look out for their own interests.

We are introduced to a variety of different demons and even a few fallen angels. The one I found most endearing if you can call a demon endearing was Harvey Ciullo. Harvey was a pretty pathetic man, while he loved his daughter he didn’t take the best care of her, he loved to bet but made stupid bets and he surely didn’t take care of himself physically. Then something happened that changed all that, Harvey was shot in the forehead at the same time he was inhabited by the fallen angel Hasmed. Hasmed set about serving his master yet trying to keep himself on earth the best he could. First he worked on getting Harvey’s body and financial situation straightened out, while at the same time working on getting followers for his master. During this time Hasmed had something happen he truly didn’t suspect. He started having true feelings for Harvey’s daughter as if she were his own. She too accepted Hasmed as a new part of her daddy. I enjoyed following Harvey/Hasmeds’ story through this book.

Were also are introduced to the demon Sabriel who gets on the wrong side of a very powerful demon named Avitu. We meet Usiel a fallen angel who hopes to send all the others back to hell and thus regain the favor of those above. These are just two amongst others who we first meet in this book. At the risk of making this review to long I will stop here. However I will say there is much more than what I have mentioned in this review to be read in the book.

I found it a good read however for some reason it didn’t draw my interest as book two did. This could very well be due to the fact that I did read book two prior to book one. However, I would still recommend reading the full trilogy and am looking forward to reading book three.

VAMPIRE:

JACOB DARK MOODS
CHARLEE JACOB
EBOOKSONTHE.NET

Vampire-Alternate Reality

This book is set in an alternate reality. It is earth or an earthlike world populated by humans and other beings. In this reality there are many different types of beings and humans are very low on the evolutionary scale.

This world has vampires that are healers, similar type creatures that can shapeshift at a beings mood into anything the being envisions. This second species are kept captives in brothels on their native island of Kura. What better prostitute than one that can be whatever her client wishes her to be.

This has a few different characters whose storylines all collide on the island of Kura. During the story we see how the vampires fall from favor when one angry woman refuses to drink the sin of the man who killed her husband. We see one who is consumed by the same fire demon he was able to harness and use against his enemies. Along with these characters there is a dwarf in love with one of the Kura prostitutes, the Kura prostitute herself who suffers at the hands of her captives and many others.

Through this book you learn how the Kura came about and their relationship to the other vampire like race. This is where I will stop so I don’t give to much of the story away. I will say that any horror reader will like this book as well as fantasy and other genre readers. This is a book whose world you can escape to for a little while and leave the real world behind.

DARK HUNGER

AMBER QUILL PRESS

E-book
Vampire Romance

In this book we are introduced to Alana and Sadash. We begin with Sadash seeing Alana for the very first time at a young age. From the first minute he is stricken and decides someday to make like him.

We then see Alana as a young woman. She gets a job in a nightclub and there the change in her life begins. She meets a strangely familiar man and falls in love. She also begins the search to find out if her mother really committed suicide when she was young or was murdered. During and through her many changes Alana has her friend Valeria to turn to.

Only Valeria can’t help Alana through her latest problem. The strange man she met at the nightclub was none other than Sadash the vampire and he has decided now is the time for her to become one too. Alana must now learn to deal with what she is and if her feelings towards Sadash have changed because of what he made her.

During this book Alana learns many things some good and some bad, but all of them in one way or another changer her. This story is well worth taking the time to read.

DARK AGES: LASOMBRA #5
DAVID NIALL WILSON
WHITE WOLF FICTION
APRIL 2003

VAMPIRE-HORROR

This book is the latest installment to another one of Vampire The Masquerade: Dark Ages clan series. This story is mainly about how the city of Constantinople has deteriorated from its’ original greatness to a place not worth living in. Yet there is a war among the clan princes to rule this city. The story of Lucita of the Lasombra clan is told in this book. You follow Lucita through her struggle to follow the orders from the elders to make the city her own. This story also parallels the stories others who are also setting about making the city their own as well. To add to the intrigue is the fact that the current ruler has no plans on giving up his throne to anyone. So Lucita must somehow endear herself to the new ruler and fulfill her orders. Not an easy task.

As a long time fan of Vampire The Masquerade and this author, I found this a welcome addition. I did however find it was a bit of a slower read for me compared to other books I have read from this author. If you are a fan of the series this is obviously a must have. I am looking forward to reading the next clan book.

BLOOD WORSHIP
BARBARA A. MACK

Vampire-Horror

Jessie is a teenage girl that has had to go through a lot this last few months. Six months ago her mother was murdered, then her best friend was murdered. Now it seems someone wants to terrify her.

There is something happening to the teens of this little town. Many are turning goth, and some are showing up dead. Who is killing these kids and why is a mystery. However it seems this mystery may be tied in some way to whomever is terrifying Jessie. Whoever this person is doesn’t seem to like the fact that Jessie wants to find out how her friend died. During this time someone has shown up in her house and made threatening calls.

Now her other best friend wants her to leave it all alone. Something just isn’t right. As if all this isn’t bad enough now Jessie’s other best friend has been murdered as well as a few other teens. All of whom have been mutilated have not a bit of blood left in their bodies.

It seems that Jessie’s dead mother has a message for her. It seems that Jessie may be the only one that has the capacity to bring the evil plaguing the youth of her town to an end. However will Jessie herself survive the threat? Or will she just be another victim of this evil being?

I found this an interesting story. However, I felt if it were longer that some unanswered questions may have been addressed. While I liked the story I felt some areas left you hanging. I welcome reading more from this author as her writing progresses.
