[Kaíres here, perennial party planner and exotic exhibition executor] We started out just planning another Sime~Gen party at WorldCon. They are always enjoyable, a chance to visit with friends, old and new. With good food and drinks, door prizes, tattoos, and occasionally a dramatic reading of some Sime~Gen literature, we attract a wide range of party-going fen. Plans were proceeding apace. Then LACon announced that they would continue an idea started last year, in Glasgow: rent out party suites one night at a time. The rooms were hideously expensive. But what a neat idea! So the JLs and I started searching for partners, who could share the party (and the expense). After exploring many possibilities, we ended up with the same great friends who shared in our party last year: BroadUniverse and EPIC. Later, advertising on listservs and websites for all three groups, we managed to rent out the two sleeping rooms that came with the party suite. The shares paid by our partners, and the rent paid for the two bedrooms, would pay 2/3 of the room cost...We decided to go for it. Then things really got interesting. The most important item to report is that the party this year had a special
theme: a reunion for the Star Trek Welcommittee.
Multitudinous thanks to the people who helped run the party, most especially:
Evelyn 'Cloud' Walton - who did most of the preliminary shopping, schlepped stuff
in and out of my car,
the hotel, our room...and videotaped most of the proceedings Cherri Munoz - who spent HOURS cutting and serving food for the party (fruit, veggies, chips, crackers, etc.), and also donated many wondrous food items, mostly from her new home in Mexico. Less obvious, but also significant, I want to thank: |
