The previous Geocities incarnation of this site hosted the index to Jacqueline's Science Fiction Review column in The Monthly Aspectarian. Those are now archived at The Re-Readable Collection of SF&F. The following is from her first column (March 1993) where she explains some of her goals for the series:
...I will deal in more than recommending books. I am going to create a reading program that will guide aspirants on the Path. Fiction creation and fiction imbibing are magical exercises in the Qabalistic Sephirah called Yesod. Yesod contains but is not composed entirely of the astral plane, the locus of dreams, aspirations, imagination, ectoplasm -- i.e. the Foundation of Reality, represented by the Tarot 9's. Thus fiction is the preceding cause of all that crystallizes in Reality.
In the training of a magician, the first seriously dangerous exercise is Rising on the Planes, and the first experience is the encounter with the Guardian at the Gate -- your own personal Guardian. It is necessary to make an ally of your Guardian if you would proceed further.
There are many methods of doing this, but the most effective is the imbibing of fiction. Fiction where the background is not the "real world" (i.e. the sephirah Malkuth represented by the Tarot 10's) can be used by the author to reveal his/her personal understanding of the quintessential nature of the "real world."
In my opinion, esoterica and occult aspects work best in science fiction and fantasy if the author has some background in at least some of the disciplines today. One doesn't have to believe or practice them (thought it might arguably help), but it is part of the background research necessary for believeable world building. You don't have to have a background in mysticism to appreciate Jacqueline's Rathorites or Katheryn Kurtz' Deryni, but if you do, you find yourself reading a different series of novels than the reader who has no esoteric background.
If you acquire an education in the Occult Sciences after first reading these novels, you will have the delight of re-reading them and finding a whole new story, completely different from what you thought was there to begin with. And you will learn the practical application of the rather abstract principles learned from scholarly pursuits.
Complimentarily, when a piece of science fiction or fantasy is well written with a good grasp of the spiritual, the work can serve as a stepping stone in one's spiritual path.
"This metaphor models embryonic growth and self-organization. It applies to all whole systems, including those as seemingly diverse as meditational practices and the mathematics fundamental to physics and cosmology...Meru Project findings demonstrate that the relationship between physical theory and consciousness, expressed in explicit geometric metaphor, was understood and developed several thousand years ago."
There will be more information here as time goes on, so keep an eye out!
