Lake is the captain of a light cargo hauler named Cotton. Preferring a hand to
mouth existence than to be in debt to anybody she makes a living carrying small
freight from port to port on small contracts. No crew, no passengers, no
problems, as long as she stays out of the way of the Corps. That is until Tock
Wain and Doll Dollan walk into a bar and sign a last minute contract to work on
Cotton, adopting her as their captain--for life. They
are a Selkade pair, the only possible means by which to ride a slide into
another sector, but they are not only a pair, they are the only male pair in
existence and possible the most powerful. Both Tock and Doll where sold into
slavery very young and they are only now coming into maturity, and into their
legacy. Having been suppressed for so long, even they are not sure what they are
capable of. Slides take them only a fraction of the time to pass through as when
they are ridden by another pair, and the speed and accuracy of their course upon
exit is mind blowing. This
pair is sure to attract attention. Their power, wisdom and intelligence is
remarkable in youths such as they are, and it doesn’t hurt that they are
gorgeous too! As they set off on a journey of self-discovery and to end the
ongoing war between sectors, they drag the delighted captain along for the ride,
eluding the corps and revolutionizing technology as they go. Reddy
has a winner with this novel which was a delight to read. The characters are
full of humor and joy, while the worlds that are revealed to the reader are
colorful and real. The abundance of dialog made this story slow going at first,
especially to a non science fiction reader, but once you get into it, it’s
hard to get out.
