| Save The Cat! is a very slender book that
lives up to its subtitle. Click the title at the right to find my full
review.
It's NOT the first or only book you need, it is the LAST -- it puts all
the notions of commercial screenplay spec sales into a precise organization
so you can actually do it.
See Syd Field's works below for the beginnings of screenwriting -- but
not the foundation of STORYCRAFT. Screencraft is built on storycraft,
and the two disciplines are on a converging path in the modern world.
Learn it all. |

|
Here is THE foundational book on the modern screenplay.
It's been updated since its first appearance in 1979. I do however recall
reading older books from the 1950's that reveal most of these tips and
tricks.
Novel writers need to know this in order to write novels that can become
screenplays without being wholly distorted.

| This book brings techniques of combat into the dating arena
-- giving men a new way to try to relate to women as dominant and purely
male.
Read some of the reviews on amazon to get an idea of how popular these
ideas are.
Women looking for a relationship between equals may find a man attempting
this "game" to be deceptively attractive. |

The
Archetypes and The Collective Unconscious (Collected Works of C.G.
Jung Vol.9 Part 1)
by C. G. Jung, Gerhard Adler, R. F.C. Hull
This book is likewise essential reading, but you can get it at the
library. It's very difficult reading a translation from the German,
or even anything written in English by a native German
speaker.

Master Characters: Mythic Models for Creating Original Characters

This approach may work for you where the approach I have
recommended through astrology might not.
Take care not to believe everything in this book - and if you're not
going to buy it, go to amazon and read
the reviews of it anyway.

Beginnings,
Middles & Ends (Elements of Fiction Writing)
by Nancy Kress
This is of course my own favorite approach and nails
many important points that beginners just have to master -- the elements
of structure. If you can't afford this book, or even if you can,
look over our standing course here in the WorldCrafter's Guild that covers
these points, The
Essence of Story.

The
Self-Publishing Manual: How to Write, Print, and Sell Your Own Book, 14th
Edition
by Dan
Poynter
Many people have found this helpful, though I don't think
self-publishing is really the way to go. There's a reason it takes a
whole company to "publish" a book, and a reason they hire people
to do their writing for them. |
It's a big and nearly unstoppable trend. Authors have
to stop writing to do promotion, and spend most of their earnings on
promotion.
Read several of these books and figure out how to use this trend in
your own favor. Take your personality into account!

Writing

I have heard King address a room full of writers about the
technicalities of the craft. He does what he does on purpose and
knows HOW he does it. Read his book and see what you can adapt for
yourself.

Body
Language Secrets: A Guide During Courtship & Dating
by R. Don Steele
Relationship driven novels will seem implausible, contrived, and badly
plotted if the body language described is at variance with the characters
deeds. Here's a great sourcebook for writers! |

Fictional life, according to Jack Bickham, is better than real
life. You don't get struck by lightning. You are not subject to random
acts of cruelty. Events proceed logically. On the other hand, Bickham
says, "In fiction, the best times for the writer--and reader--are
when the story's main character is in the worst trouble." Not good if
you're a fictional character. The 38 Most Common Fiction Writing
Mistakes is as engaging as Bickham wants your fiction to be. It is
sharp, focused, funny, and pointed.

There's not much of the old-style editing going on at publishing
houses today. Renni Browne, veteran of William Morrow and other
publishers, founded the Editorial Department in 1980 to teach fiction
writers the techniques professional editors (many of whom have gone
independent) use to prepare a manuscript for publication. In this book,
she and senior editor Dave King share their accumulated expertise in a
series of brilliantly compact lessons. |

Those Who Trespass : A Novel of Murder and Television

|
The real story in Those Who
Trespass, ... is that "the way it is," as Walter
Cronkite would have said, is not a very nice way at all. O'Reilly, a
veteran of Fox and an Emmy winner himself, reveals the skullduggery that
goes on under the anchor desk and on the other side of the camera:
correspondents "bigfooting" others' stories, young climbers
doing anything to secure the anchor seat, and ratings outfits fixing the
game to suit themselves. Once you've read this, you will understand the
part of the news that's not fit to print. --This text refers to the Hardcover
edition. |
