If you only have one computer, this could be just what
you need. I'd recommend the whole Norton System Works package for
most people, but be sure the version of it you buy contains all that's in
this package.
This is the perfect solution if
you have 3 computers in your house. Trust me, you can't live without
an anti-Virus program of some sort. It's this or MacAfee if you want
the best.
This is the 2003 version of the program I use to make these web
pages. It is the perfect tool for a person with a writer's mind,
while Dreamweaver or a hand-coder like Arachnophilia is the perfect tool
for someone who loves math and science and accounting.
Wireless home networking is still a headache. This goodie works
in some situations and fails miserably in others. See my review on
amazon - it worked for me. You plug this into the USB port, feed the
cd into the drive, and you're connected to the internet IFF you have a
router connected to a modem and your service subscription up to
date.
Plenty of great plot ideas in this one - and
don't shudder at the List Price - there's a big discount in effect - and
you can pick it up used too.
IF YOU HAVE A HACKER FOR A CHARACTER YOU NEED THIS BOOK NOW
A lot of computer-security textbooks approach the subject from a defensive point of view. "Do this, and probably you'll survive a particular kind of attack," they say. In refreshing contrast, Hacking Exposed, Second Edition talks about security from an offensive angle. A Jane's-like catalog of the weaponry that black-hat hackers use is laid out in full. Readers see what programs are out there, get a rundown on what the programs can do, and benefit from detailed explanations of concepts (such as wardialing and rootkits) that most system administrators kind of understand, but perhaps not in detail. The book also walks through how to use the more powerful and popular hacker software,

People who seriously attack the problem of
becoming a selling writer find they start working connected to the
internet all the time. A second phone line is expensive.
Everyone else wants to use the internet at the same time.
Don't quarrel - network. Drop a phone line, and it'll pay for the
network equipment in less than a year - and the fighting will
stop.
Read this book, think about peace.
Amazon's
reviewer says:
......This is the type of book you can blow through in a couple of
evenings. But despite its conciseness, it will give you an expert's ability
to judge Web design. You'll never form a first impression of a site in the
same way again. --Stephen W. Plain
Writers today must do much
of their own publicity and having a website that works is vital. Take
an evening to soak up some principles then go surfing around some author's
websites so you'll know what you want.

It used to be that developing customer relationships in a
mass-market economy didn't matter. All a successful company had to do was
make products that people generally liked--build it and they would come.
Patricia Seybold thinks those days are long gone. Thanks to the Internet,
customers matter more than ever, and companies that don't get it simply
won't make it. In The Customer Revolution she writes, "For the
first time in the history of modern business, it's now cost-effective for
companies to establish relationships with each and every customer who
wants us to know him."
Seybold outlines the principles of the "customer economy" and
looks at 14 companies, including Charles Schwab, Snap-on, and
Hewlett-Packard, who are in the process of refocusing their businesses to
meet customer needs and expectations by measuring and running their
businesses on metrics such as customer satisfaction, acquisition,
retention rates, and wallet share. In the customer economy, building brand
means more than creating a clever logo--it requires creating an
"experience that your customers love." She offers up a set of
practices--what she calls a "Customer Flight Deck"--that allows
companies to monitor and tune the success of their customer contacts.
I think you need to
read both those books to understand either one.
I found this book by watching an
interview with the author on CNBC.
The interviewer asked if the meltdown in tech prices in the latter
part of 2000 was the beginning of this depression, and the answer was
maybe. The interviewer asked what can be done to avert this
predicted depression, and the answer was that the Fed must cut interest
rates while employment is still at the highest level.
You don't have to be an expert to calculate the odds of the Fed
doing that.
simegen.com expects to survive this downswing, but to do it we'll
need more volunteers.
Book Description Traffic on the Internet is doubling every 100 days. DSL, cell
phones, IP (Internet Protocol) telephony, wireless networking, and
e-commerce are changing the way people talk, work, shop, and do business.
To stay current with the pace of innovation, Harry Newton adds and updates
over 100 definitions a week. Essential for everyone who must keep up with
the new technologies and concepts, this book meant to be used every day.
Easy-to-understand definitions and mini essays, sprinkled with Newton's
dry...
Highly regarded by telecom professionals, this
book is nevertheless vividly illustrative, and creates memorable
definitions.

The Python programming language is rapidly gaining
ground as a tool of server adminstrators because it is versatile,
cross-platform, and can work with C/C++. This book has a very lucid
explanation of why this programming language is so powerful and appealing
to those who need such tools.
