If you are a writing student, are convinced that there's nothing of value in astrology and it's just a laughable party game or a con-artist's gold-mine, buy Astrology for the Millions along with Heaven Knows What, it's companion volume, follow the simple directions for sketching charts of yourself, and some of your family members you know very well.  

Then do the same for a few of your characters.  THEN decide if astrology has any use for you, and perhaps get the Basil Fearrington title to begin a serious study of astrology as a writer's tool.
