CLASSICAL MUSIC

by Susan H Bartlett

Featured Work

Music of Alan Hovhaness

The light and lovely Harp concertos in this recording make for good, peaceful music to leave in the background while writing.

Johann S Bach:
Goldberg Variations

Simone Dinnerstein makes for a great new voice to be heard on her debut solo album. Probably one of the best recordings of the Goldberg variations available.
Luciano Pavarotti:
The Best

Generally, I shy away from recordings advertising themselves as "The Best". But here, for one shining moment, it is true. Relive the best of Pavarotti even after his passing.
Johann Sebastian Bach:
Inventions and Sinfonias

Although not as popular as the Glenn Gould rendition, I think that this comes closer to what Bach actually intended with these pieces.
Ludwig Von Beethoven:
Complete Symphonies

A better and more reasonably priced boxed set of Beethoven's complete symphonic works would be hard to find.
Johann Sebastian Bach:
Unaccompanied Cello Suites

I still think cello music is one of the most romantic types of music available - and here it is without any other accompaniment.
Aaron Copeland:
Appalachian Spring, Rodeo,
Billiy the Kid, and Fanfare

Who better than America's Conductor, Leonard Bernstein, to play the music of America's Composer, Aaron Copeland?
Pytor Illych Tchaikovsky:
Swan Lake
Complete Ballet Suite

Rarely heard ouside the ballet hall, the complete Ballet Suite is a joy for the holidays.
Pytor Illych Tchaikovsky:
The Nutcracker
Complete Ballet Suite

The complete Ballet Suite is rarely heard - if you think you heard it all in "Fantasia" you're wrong.
George Frederick Handel:
The Messiah

One of the most beloved holiday classics.
Johann Sebastian Bach:
Complete Bradenburg Concertos

Now available as a complete set, this version of the Brandenburg Concertos really shines.
Vivaldi:
The Four Seasons

For when you want to catch a moment of what the meanings of the seasons could really be.
Philip Glass:
Orion

Philip Glass' techniques really allow him some great moments on this comissioned work featuring a separate musical number for seven different countries, and three interludes that really let you see how those nations both complement and contrast with each other.
Debussy:
La Mer
Respighi:
Fountains of Rome / Pines of Rome

Very nice to find both Fountains and Pines on a single CD - and to include such a wonderful recording of La Mer almost makes this disc indispensable.
Rimsky-Korsakov:
Scheherazade
Stravinsky:
Song of the Nightingale

These "Living Stereo" productions usually live up to their name - they make your stereo come alive with music.
Dvorak:
Symphony Number 9: For the New World:
Includes other works

Also includes Smetana's Bartered Bride overture and Weinberger: Polka and Fugue (Schwanda the Bagpiper)
Bartok:
Concerto for Orchestra;
Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta;
Hungarian Sketches

These three works by Bartok are a fine addition to your library.
Mussorgsky:
Pictures at an Exhibition;
and Other Works

A musical tour thru an art gallery. Try closing your eyes and let your mind's eye imagine the works of art that helped to inspire this music. Also includes some other material.
Igor Stravinsky:
Petrouchka,
Rite of Spring,
and Fireworks

The masterful movement from Petrouchka to the Rite of Spring was a real eye-opener. Not to be played at bedtime.
Maurice Ravel:
Bolero;
and other works

There is absolutely no more romantic piece of music than Ravel's Bolero.
Berlioz:
Symphony Fantastique

Try this for opening up that thrid eye when attepting to visualize scenes of the fantastic.

A Short Biography of Susan Bartlett

Who am I?

I'm a former romance author trying to get back into the swing of things. I'm married, and have a wonderful daughter. My old romances were written back in my naive youth. By today's standards, I guess you could call them "Scooby Doo" Romance/Mysteries. My biggest seller was "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb".

The basic plot was: A young female American archaeologist is working at an Egyptian dig. She has a crush on the Assistant to the Senior American Archaeologist, until a mysterious stranger, in the form of an Egyptian liaison, comes into her life. After discovering an unusual artifact in an old tomb, mysterious things begin happening in the camp. Clues point to a Mummy's curse that has overtaken the party. Some indicate that a real Mummy may be stalking the crew. This causes our heroine to seek solace in the arms of the liaison. After the death of the senior archaeologist, the party eventually tracks down the real cause of the events - an Egyptian man who wants the artifacts to remain in Egypt instead of being placed in an American museum. She uses these events to help her decide that she does not want to spend the rest of her life in Egypt with the liaison - just in time for the Assistant to propose to her due to his advancement into the (now deceased) Senior Archaeologist's position.

I want to start writing again - and heavily revise my old stories. I couldn't tell the types of stories I wanted to tell when I was originally writing. I wanted to have real Mummies, and real Ghosts, and real Monsters. Now, with the popularity of the new Gothic Horror Romance, I can write the stories I want. My daughter is grown now and I have lots of time on my hands. You will hear from me again.

By the way, if you find any of my old romances on the shelf anywhere, let me know. I lost my only copies during a move and have none of my old books to go by.
