J.C. WILDER/DOMINIQUE ADAIR

Redemption

J.C. Wilder lives just outside of Columbus, Ohio where she's owned by a Japanese Akita named Severena and a really obnoxious Jack Russell Terrier named Copper Penny.

She spends the majority of her time dusting her 6,000 books and staring at her blank computer screen in complete terror. When not writing, she devotes much of her time to studying the medicinal uses of herbs and essential oils and howling at the moon.

A Time To Shine @ Sime~Gen would like to Welcome J.C. Wilder/Dominique Adair and thank her for interviewing with us.

THE INTERVIEW

What genres do you write?

I write paranormal and erotic paranormal romances.

Where do you get your ideas?

Life – almost anything can spark an idea for a book. Something I read or hear as I’m walking down the street. I’m a news junkie and I’m an avid ‘what if’ person and I’m constantly playing that game while I watch the news.

How do you come up with your characters?

I don’t come up with them – they sort of grab me and don’t let go until I write their story down. <G>

Are they based on real people or pure imagination?

Most are 100% imagination. I have a few characters that have aspects of people who are very dear to me but they’re rare.

What books do you have planned for the near future?

I’m currently slated for seven novellas and six novels through the middle of 2005. I’m starting a new series from the Shadow Dweller Series and they’ll be called the Shadow Hunters and the first novella comes out in October. I also have the next two books of the Xanthra Chronicles, a futuristic series, as well as several different novellas.

When is your next book due out?

My next release is a novella entitled FULL MOON MAGIC in an anthology entitled IN MOONLIGHT from Ellora’s Cave. It is due out in July 2004.

Can we have a sneak summary?

Sure - Esme Proctor is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter in a legendary lineage of witches. Betrothed at a young age, she is whisked off to live in near solitude until the morning of her marriage. Desperate to escape her upcoming nuptials, she conjures a lover to take her virginity and free her from the betrothal contract.
Only things don't work out quite as she'd expected....

Do you have any book signings/appearances in the future?

February 14th, 2004 - Book signing at Barnes and Noble, Tremont Rd – Columbus, OH from 4 – 6pm. Other authors include Jennifer Cruise, Rosemary Laurey and more!
March 24 – 28, 2004 - The Romantic Times Conference - Martinique Hotel – New York City

What do you feel makes your books unique or stand out from others in your genre?

My books are pretty sexy and they were even before the more erotic reads became trendy. I like a fast-paced story with strong men and intelligent women who end up in complex situations and this is what I strive to create. You’ll never see any of my characters sitting around bemoaning their fate; they accept their lives and strive to live it as best they can.

Do you have a special subgenre and if so what is it?

I don’t know if I have a special subgenre – almost everything I’ve ever written is paranormal. I’ve done vampires, were-cats, elves, shapeshifters and now I’m working on some were-wolves and gargoyles.

Do you have a favorite place that you like to write?

I do most of my writing in my office at home. I do have a laptop and can pretty much write anywhere I like though. ?

In what order do you write? (Beginning to End; combining parts; in random
order; development cycle)

From beginning to end every time.

Do you feel that the ebook industry affords authors a bit more freedom of expression in their books?

Definitely.

What do you like about what is/isn't being done to promote authors?

I’m not really sure how to answer this. Unless you are a big name the traditional houses will do very little to promote authors and the same goes with epublished authors. The reality of writing is that you have to promote yourself as very few publishers will help you do it.

Do you think that marketing departments have their "fingers on the pulse of readers?"

I think some of them do. It seems like the majority of the large publishers are struggling to play catch up but I think that comes from the fact that they are very large and they can’t make immediate decisions like the small press publishers. All publishers are motivated by numbers and dollars and that can blind them to the latest trends that readers are hungry for.

How do you feel about the review rating system and its affects on public opinion?

I’m not really sure what you’re talking about.

In what kind of venues can we find your books?

Online you can find them at amazon.com, bn.com, bamm.com, fictionwise.com or any of the large booksellers. You can also order them from your local bookseller.

What do you feel is the best aspect of the Publishing Industry?

For a writer it is being paid to do what we love. Authors are some of the luckiest people in the world.

What do you feel could stand to be "tweaked" so to speak?

Pay rates and author input on marketing, covers etc.

With the rise of the E-book publishers and small press, do you think they will be the wave of the future?

Definitely. Just look at the growth of the industry in the past four years. It’s mind-boggling.

How do you think the E-book industry has affected the Publishing Industry?

I don’t know that it has. I’d like to think that the bigger pubs would realize that variety is what the readers want but judging from what I’m seeing on the racks it hasn’t happened yet.

Is there anything else you would like to add that we haven't covered?

My website is at http://www.jcwilder.com and I have contests, exclusive excerpts, chat lists and more going on so stop on by and check it out!
