THE INTERVIEW

What genres do you write?

I like the weird stuff, like paranormal romance. I do have one romantic suspense, Sinister Knight, after that first book, I tend to pull in the odd things into my suspense, like vampires, aliens or time-travelers. I have a historical time-travel, To Sail Through Time out, as well as, the first of my Eternity series, Eternity's Many Loves. I have some futuristics on the not-so-far-back burner, and hope to submit them before the end of the year.

Where do you get your ideas?

Sheesh! I have no idea! They just pop in my head, especially when I'm reading someone else's stuff and I think of the what-if syndrome. Vampire stories make me think of my own characters and futuristic books make me think of my own out-of-this-world realms.

How do you come up with your characters?

Mostly, I think of the guys first. My vampire stories centered around the men before I brought in the heroines. I guess that was true for my pirate time-travel too. I had the character in mind long before the story started to take place.

Are they based on real people or pure imagination?

Pure imagination. I usually have my character in mind before I can find a picture that is near them. In my vampire novels, I do my own artwork and really have to dig to find someone that resembles my character the way I have him pictured. That's not an easy job. Right now, I'm looking for a sexy, looking Italian to be my Demitri for my 3rd vampire.

What books do you have planned for the near future?

Let me count the ways.... Hum... finish my 3rd vampire books, finish my futuristic/sci-fi trilogy, finish my standalone futuristic, decide what do do with another vampire book that was created before my vampire trilogy and doesn't fit the same vampire world. Last but not least, decide where I want about 15 works-in-progress to go. These are in various stages from 10 to 50 pages.

When is your next book due out?

Eternity's Lonely Heart is the next one out from Whiskey Creek Press. It is the second of my Eternity trilogy.

Can we have a sneak summary?

In the first book I introduce the vampire, Ethan deVaca and his entranced servant, Blake Henry. The second book is his story.

Blake wants to be free from Ethan's hypnotic hold so that he can love and marry the woman of his desires. Reluctantly, Ethan's grants Blake Henry his wish to be his own master. Blake Henry loved in the past and married his heart's dream, but she was human... Now in modern times of the 21st century, he doesn't feel that he can love any other than the one now gone.

Holly Winthrop is running from her uncle after witnessing him kill her father. Her uncle wants her dead and claims to police that she killed her multi-millionaire father for the Winthrop legacy. Holly never dreams that she can have the ultimate super-hero to help her clear her name. The biggest problem with her new supernatural friend is that he has fangs and will make her forget him after her name is cleared. How can she forget the one she now loves?

Do you have any book signings/appearances in the future?

No. I don't get many opportunities to promote my books.

What do you feel makes your books unique or stand out from others in your genre?

My vampires are not so dark and deadly but heroes with fangs, my heroines are bold and sassy, but can still be very feminine and my aliens are down to earth, so to speak.

Do you have a special subgenre and if so what is it?

Hum. I'm not sure. Romance with vampires and aliens?

Do you have a favorite place that you like to write?

I do all my writing at my computer, surrounded by my dogs. I breed chihuahuas.

In what order do you write? (Beginning to End; combining parts; in random order; development cycle)

Beginning to end. I go through a story many times. Usually I put the whole story in the computer and then start filling out the scenes and characters with emotions and actions and reactions.

(Ebook Authors) Do you feel that the ebook industry affords authors a bit more freedom of expression in their books?

Most certainly. I could never get the cross genre stories that I write into a New York house, because the stories are not cowboys and babies and pregnant mommies. I leave the soap operas to the TV stations and New York printing houses.

What do you like about what is/isn’t being done to promote authors?

Well, I for one do not have time to promote myself and I find that a difficult situation, because people don't know me and my books as well as I wish they did. New York is too hard to break into and small presses don't have the money for high promotional schemes. That leaves an author in small presses having to do much of her own work to get her name known.

Do you think that marketing departments have their “fingers on the pulse of readers?”

In New York yes, and I don't think, personally, that they know what readers really like.

How do you feel about the review rating system and its affects on public opinion?

Interesting question. I have had the same book rated 5 stars the best and 1 star the worst by different reviewers. Frankly, it just depends on 'that' reviewer and if they like your work, just like normal readers. They can love it or hate it. It's a real gamble to send your work off to reviewers. You never know what to expect. Brace yourself for something bad and when it comes through good, you can really feel elated. 95% of the time, the ratings will be good, so don't let the one bad one blow your mind.

In what kind of venues can we find your books?

I'm in electronic form only, now. I went the trade paperback route and found that people really don't want to pay that much for a paperback book, unless you're a big name. As I said, I don't have time to promote myself, so, I can't buy my own books and go around to numerous bookstore and try to work out a deal with them.

What do you feel is the best aspect of the Publishing Industry?

The worst thing of New York is that they don't accept enough books of unknown authors and the best thing of the small press is that they are willing to take a chance on you, even if you haven't been published before. Small presses print some really good books that the majority of the worlds readers won't see, and of course, I hope that mine are numbered with the good ones. I'd like to believe that, but if they aren't, so what? I have a chance to get my books out to readers that I would not have a chance to otherwise.

What do you feel could stand to be “tweaked” so to speak?

New York needs to tweak their submission structure. I don't know how they could do it better because I don't work for them, but 2 years to wait on an answer to a book that you can simultaneously submit is ridiculous.

With the rise of the E-book publishers and small press, do you think they will be the wave of the future?

Yes, but slowly. I just moved from the big city back to the country, close to where I grew up. Many of the people don't even know how to use a computer except for e-mail, much less would take the time to read an electronic book. Electronic books, however, can be bought from all over the world and have a market that reaches to anyone who can order on-line. It's wonderful.

How do you think the E-book industry has affected the Publishing industry?

Not much, yet. It won't until the general public learns to purchase a hand-held reader and can take the book with them to read. It's hard to take your computer to the beach or to the park or even sit in the tub to read. One day soon maybe, people can learn what wonderful stories electronic books can offer. I hope I'm still around for that.

Is there anything else you would like to add that we haven’t covered?

Nothing that I can think of except to say to all electronically published authors, hang in there. Someday you'll have many, many more readers and they will know your name.
