Tracy Ranson

The Conqurer

Tracy was born, and raised in Kentucky, and is still living in the same house she was raised.

She lives with her husband of six years, a crazy beagle and a cat who never ceases to give the dog a little bit of his 'cattitude' at every given opportunity.

While they currently have no children, when not writing or working, Tracy's that goal as well. For some time Tracy dabbled in writing, but never really took it seriously. However, through her husband's constant encouragement Tracy kept writing.

It finally paid off. In May of 2000, with her first book, Bride of the Overlord, was published by Sirius Publications. Tracy's main inspiration for writing is her husband. To Tracy he's a combination of Kieran, from The Conqueror, Alexander from Bride of the Overlord, Kendrick from Passion's Prisoner and Erik from Viking Seduction.

A Time To Shine @ Sime~Gen would like to welcome Tracy Ranson and thank her for interviewing with us.

THE INTERVIEW

What genres do you write?

Mostly historical at the moment but I'm branching out into different areas of romance.

Where do you get your ideas?

I'm a history buff so a lot of my ideas come from research books as well as old movies and outside inspiration.

How do you come up with your characters?

It all depends. Sometimes I create the character first, usually from someone I know or else I'll create the plot first and mold the characters around it.

Are they based on real people or pure imagination?

Sometimes I will base characters on historical fact. Other times, I will weave historical figures into my novels, such as Edward the Longshanks, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in my forthcoming novel, THE WARLORD'S WOMAN. I true to instill a little bit of history in each and every book.

What books do you have planned for the near future?

A great mix! A little paranormal, some time travel as well as more historicals.

When is your next book due out?

In April. The name of it is CARIBBEAN SPLENDOUR and its a historical set in the island of Martinique.

Can we have a sneak summary?

Blaze Montgomery is left a young widow with a young son to raise. Mountains of debt surround her and she has no way to pay it. Secretly, she hated her husband, a man she had to marry because...she carried another man’s child...the notorious pirate Raven’s child. With no recourse to left to her, she tries to get a job. She is discharged from all three and is forced into prostitution until a stranger saves her.

Justin Blackmore, Second Earl of Sexton had sworn revenge on Daniel Montgomery for ruining his family, forcing him into piracy. He came to Martinique to exact it only to find that Daniel is already dead. That leaves his unanswered questions to Blaze. Why did she leave him that night in the cave after he went to get things ready for their departure? If she loved him as the Raven, why did she leave? In an effort to find out those answers, Justin must yet don another disguise of sorts....

Do you have any book signings/appearances in the future?

Not as of yet but I will soon!

What do you feel makes your books unique or stand out from others in your genre?

I try to blend historical fact with fiction as well as turn up the heat on the passion and love.

Do you have a favorite place that you like to write?

My office is where I write. The way I have my desk positioned, I can look outside and watch the comings and goings of the world.

In what order do you write? (Beginning to End; combining parts; in random order; development cycle).

I normally write from beginning to end, only writing middles or scenes when they come to me (if they're significant to the story).

Do you feel that the ebook industry affords authors a bit more freedom of expression in their books?

Yes it does because the plots are no longer cookie cutter. I feel that most of the big publishers want all their authors to fit into one mold and they keep cranking out the same old story line whereas e-publishers allow authors the freedom to experiment.

What do you like about what is/isn’t being done to promote authors?

With my publisher, I will have to say they're going the extra mile for promotion, taking on most of the work regarding setting up reviews. They have quite a few review sites on auto-send so that I don't have to bother with that. I don't really see any downside to this.

Do you think that marketing departments have their “fingers on the pulse of readers?”

Most definitely.

How do you feel about the review rating system and its affects on public opinion?

I honestly think readers really don't go by reviews necessarily. If it's an author they like and the reviews are bad, they'll still buy the book to judge for themselves. If there are rave reviews about a book, then they'll be all the more anxious to buy it.

In what kind of venues can we find your books?

Fictionwise, OfficeMax Digitial Books, The Mage, NewConcepts Publishing website.

What do you feel is the best aspect of the Publishing Industry?

Exposure to readers and having my tales told around the world. I have had readers write to me and tell me how wonderful my books are and how it swept them away from the problems of the day. That makes me feel wonderful and it makes all the time I put into writing a book all the more worth it.

What do you feel could stand to be “tweaked” so to speak?

Perhaps getting the books to paper faster but I know that can't be helped sometimes.

With the rise of the E-book publishers and small press, do you think they will be the wave of the future?

Most definitely! I've talked to several women on some of the lists I belong and they've confessed to having over 1000 books! The books are stored either on the hard drive or on CD's and the readers love them! They don't have to invest money on shelves to house the books on or find storage for them. Also, the price of e-books is great!

How do you think the E-book industry has affected the Publishing industry?

I think that with new authors being published every day and new plots coming out, more people will be turning to fresh voices as well as stories, making the big NY almost obsolete.

Is there anything else you would like to add that we haven’t covered?

Thanks for inviting me, Carol. I enjoyed the interview and looking forward to working again with you in the future!
