The child's life revolves around the poplar tree in front of Grandpa's house, the big bulldog, Mack, who runs in the back, and Grandpa himself. One by one each of the three dies. As Grandpa chops the poplar for firewood, he shows the child how the world is made of opposites. You can't have left without right, up without down or birth without death. The family goes to the turkey farm to pick out their Thanksgiving turkey. When they get home, the protagonist sees the President pardon his turkey on TV. He convinces his parents to pardon their turkey, but not his big sister Sally. Mom says they can pardon the turkey and the family drives their turkey to the Turkey Pardon Park to live out its natural life. Sister Sally gets a few slices of turkey from the deli.  When she sees the big feast, she realizes she doesn't need the turkey. The protagonist gives thanks for his sister.
