Family Search This website provides everything a researcher needs to get started on a family history. It also provides an extensive database of people who are researching and the research they have done. This site includes the Social Security Death Index and a searchable indexed census. No family historian can do affective complete research without checking out what the family history archives of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Best part of this collection of information is that it is free to the public.

Cyndi's List of Genealogical Sites on the Internet This is probably the most comprehensive genealogical website on the Internet. A great reference place for beginners and old pros alike.

U.S. National Archives and Records Administration I have successfully ordered documents from the NARA. These documents can take time to locate, copy, and have shipped to you. However, it is a treasure trove of information for both historical and genealogical research that cannot be overlooked.

Civil War Records This website is an excellent source of information on the Civil War, including links to battlefields by state, links to databases that include Medal of Honor winners, cemeteries, and databases maintained by the National Park Service.
