Historical research for the scholar, student, writer, and hobbiest can be challenging at best when distance, finances, and other difficulties conspire to keep all but the most fortunate from studying the past. However, in recent years the internet has provided many of us with unparalled opportunities of research, and they only continue to expand the horizons of research. In an attempt to make historical research on the internet more organized, I have collected a large number of sites which provide the avid researcher with important materials.
Primary sources are original products of the time period they represent. Photos from the Civil War are primary sources. Newspaper articles, correspondence, financial documents, are also primary documents. Even cultural items which are representative of a era are considered primary materials. Posters of Rosie the Riveter from the U.S. WWII, or Nazi propaganda posters are primary materials.
Primary materials are the basis for all study of history. Just as an archeologist must dig for evidence to support his theories about the lives of past societies, so must the historian seek through primary materials for evidence to analyze and create his own theories about the past.
