Datelines and Deadlines

Gina Wisker

1
You look delectable
Good enough to eat my dear
He said
Leaning across the table
Seizing her subtly and surely then
Carving neatly through her torso
With the perfectly honed blade
Brandishing his fork
For the banquet.

2
Flesh out the narrative, he said
Put some meat on the carcass of this
Potentially rich story!
a little late, I thought
Having pared it down, stroke by careful paring knife stroke
To just the bare bones

3
It takes guts, he said
To do
What you did, leaving him and home
Taking nothing
Moving on
What a rush
Ah but
She retorted
I did take something,
I took the guts

4
What a thrill what an
Amazing achievement what a
Match! Eat your heart out
Oh you jealous ones who
Denigrate this wild success
Mutter cruelly about shortlived fantasy
Splutter as we flesh out the
Bare bones of our tale and
Green with mouldy envy finally
Pelican like, tear your own breasts
Devouring the tender beating morsel
Laying it at last
to rest.

5
Til death do us part but
Coffined now, limed in
In this liminal space between
Commitment and cremation
What price
Our vows?
