GLENDALOUGH TRANSFER

This the newsletter of Householding Ashar.

Colors: deep aquamarine and cream

Business: Sime/Gen Welcommittee

Motto: "We stand, so none need stand alone."

Membership: Welcommittee staff

For those of you whom I am contacting for the first time, I am BethAnn Wempe, a first order channel specializing in changeover problems (I have two teenage daughters.) I am taking charge--or at least attempting to do so--of the S/G Welcommittee at the request of Rayna Daughtry who has gone on to other things and with the concurrence of Jacqueline Lichtenberg.

The name of this newsletter is a bit of personal whimsy--Glendalough is the name of the birthplace of my maternal grandfather. I will be sending it out every three months or so and will include any requests, comments, etc. that any of you wish to send me. I will not for the most part, repeat information from Vantage Point News, since most of those receiving this also receive that. This will contain additional information on cons, questions, answers, whatever. I would appreciate any and all suggestions on inclusions and/or format.

I need people who are willing to act as first contacts for the Welcommittee. No experience is necessary---I am the living example of this fact. All you need is a familiarity with the S/G novels and 'zines and a liking for contacting new people through the mails. It is a great way to meet new friends.

Book News

I was fortunate enough to see the cover illustrations for the paper back editions of RENSIME and DUSHAU. Except for a few small errors which Jacqueline pointed out, I thought that they were beautiful. If anyone doesn't agree, just compare them to the original PB cover for HOUSE of ZEOR or that of CHANNEL'S DESTINY where you find tentacle sheaths on the girl's ankles.

Jacqueline will have two non-S/G novels published during the first half of this year. They are CITY OF A MILLION LEGENDS (a Kren novel) and DUSHAU (a new universe.) RENSIME has been out since December.

JL is interested in knowing what new S/G books fen are interested in seeing published. This is important, because DAW has an "only one a year" policy. The possibilities are: One by Kerry Schaefer about Frevven--the nearsighted channel; A genrunner novel by Andrea Alton; one by Lin Bordwell set just before Digen's time; Jean Lorrah's sequel to CHANNEL'S DESTINY; one by Jacqueline about the founding of the House of Zeor. A short description of each story by the author will follow. If you have any preference, rank these proposed stories in order and write to JL at: PO Box 290, Monsey, NY 10952.

Frevven by Kerry Schaefer. This story takes place during the time Muryin Farris, Klyd's daughter, was sectuib in Zeor and before the Battle of Leander Field. Frevven is a disjunct, first-order channel whose secret desire is to someday be good enough to be asked to pledge Zeor. Much to his distress he is assigned to Innsfrey Island, an out-territory Sime Center. Assigned to study the decreasing changeover rate among island children, he discovers and then overcomes the efforts of the Church of Salvation through Faith to murder all children who go into changeover. At the same time he is reminded of his own out-territory childhood and has to cope with psychological problems that he thought that he had settled long ago.

Starred Cross Patrol by Lin Bordwell. It's a novel with a female, empathic protagonist who, in trying to save a girl in changeover, causes her friend's death when the girl attacks. A fanatic Gen pursues Marrah as she becomes involved with Westfield Center, runs away to a small inn, begins a patrol for changing kids, joins an underground group and avoids Jorin, a channel, even though she loves him because she is potentially his matchmate and is not approved of by the Tecton since they are unsure of her empathy with Simes. The opposition is joined by more Sime-hating fanatics. Along the way, Marrah, cannot seem to break free and brings pain to all her friends until the resolution in the end. Because of her, the patrol grows using sympathetic Gens where Simes cannot go.

Icy Nager by Andrea Alton. This is the story of Rafe Merryweather whom the Simes call Icy Nager. He is a Sime-Sider ... that is he is a Gen who makes it his profession to go across the Border into Sime territory and rescue Gen prisoners. His cousin's daughter is taken. She is the daughter of General Cohen who is General of the Western Army. Fearing if Cohen finds out his daughter has been taken In-Territory, Cohen will start a war, Rafe goes looking for the child. It just so happens that a Sime has been brought into the local jail. He knows the raiders who took the child and is willing to help get her back in return for his freedom. The Sime's name is Evanthal. They rescue the child who tells them that the men who captured her were not Simes, they were Gens and she was sold by them to the Raiders. The rest of the story consists of discovering the identity of the Gen-runners, while the Gen-runners are trying to kill off Rafe. Evanthal remains with Rafe and the story also revolves around their growing friendship. The time of this story is roughly in the period when Householdings were first forming, but before the time of Klyd Farris.

If anyone is familiar with JL's Kraith series and is willing to contribute a few paragraphs to this newsletter I would be very grateful.

If you have difficulty finding any particular SF/fantasy book, you might try A Change of Hobbit at: 1853 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90404. They do mail order business and book searches. A SASE will get you their latest monthly newsletter and new title list.

Out-Territory-Australia

Outside of the US, the main area of S/G activity seems to be Australia. I have a list of Aussie fans--if anyone would like a copy of the list or would like to be added to it, please SASE me. If anyone has any contributions to GT, send it to me. JL's books are available at Galaxy Bookshop in Sydney. Does anyone know of any other places?
