FIRST TRANSFER #8 8909

FROM THE SECTUIB'S DESK ...

As some of you already know, my moving plans have been altered ever so slightly. I've move to Las Vegas instead of Cedar Rapids. I now have very nice roommates -- my friend, Ed, a Pekinese dog, and two cats. I don't regret my move in the slightest.

To business at hand!

First of all, allow me to welcome any of you who are receiving this humble publication for the first time. WELCOME!!!!! And, for those of you who receive this newsletter regularly or semi-regularly, WELCOME BACK!!!!!

For the new readers, I'd like you to know that this newsletter contains some information that you may find handy either now or later. Such as zines, who edits them and how to reach them. Also, who is currently on the Welcommittee and where to reach these people should you have any questions. Mostly it lets you know what we're up to as well as what is happening with Jacqueline.

I'd like to let each person, new or old, to know that when you write to Jacqueline or any one of us on the Wel, your letter is a valued item. Perhaps you may not get as rapid an answer as you like, but you do get an answer for your efforts. There isn't one of us out there who didn't start off in this particular fandom by writing a letter. Any exceptions might be the people Jacqueline knew already who knew what a talented and delightful lady she is.

I don't know about the rest of my little staff, but I look upon each letter as a potential new friend. I also look upon this fandom as being a little like a family made up of many warm, caring and wonderful people.

A bit of good news for those of you waiting for the companion novel to THOSE OF MY BLOOD. It looks like a November or December release date for DREAMSPY according to what I got from Jacqueline herself! I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm looking forward to it!!

If any of you have something you'd like the rest of us to know, such as a birth, sales of something you wrote, drew or painted, big move, whatever, or you have a game or puzzle you'd like to share with everyone send it to me and I'll print it here.

Anyone wishing to receive future copies of this newsletter may do so by filing a SASE for each future issue they wish to receive. For those unfamiliar with what a SASE is, it is a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope.

Until next issue smile, it makes people wonder what you've been up to!

Yours in fandom and friendship,

Linda

BOOK REVIEW

Ruth Sacksteder recommended reading the book SHATTERED GLASS by Elaine Bergstrom. It is a Jove Paperback book and is marketed as "Horror" although Ruth says she's seen it in the mystery section of some book stores. The vampires in it are not supernatural dead, but aliens like in Jacqueline's THOSE OF MY BLOOD and Martin's FEVRE DREAM. Ruth reports that Ms. Bergstrom's style is quite different from Jacqueline's, yet there is a lot there that the Sime/Gen/Luren fans will like.

HOUSEHOLDING NEWS

[EDITOR'S NOTE: S/G fans tend to organize into little sub-groups called Householdings, patterned after Zeor and the other Houses in the different novels. They are, essentially, mini-fan clubs that make up the whole of Jacqueline's fandom.]

For the sake of space economy, I'm listing only the current active Householdings who are accepting new members.

URGENT!!!

Has anyone heard from Mark Kadey of late? Has Householding Kamali fallen off the face of the earth? If anyone out there knows of his whereabouts, please contact either Kerry Lindemann-Schaefer or myself.

NEW FAN HOUSEHOLDING SEEKS MEMBERS

House of Shaeldor was originally created by Kerry Lindemann-Schaefer for use in her Frevven stories. However, it is now accepting members as a fan Householding also. Its colors are dark brown and blue-green, while its crest is a brown silhouette of a schooner on a blue-green background.

In the S/G universe, Shaeldor's business is nautical development and trade, but in the mundane world, it will have a special connection with the ocean and all its flora and fauna. Anyone wishing to pledge must commit themselves to take action to help the ocean on a regular basis. This could take the form of joining environmental organizations, writing legislators, picking up trash on your local beach or waterway--anything to reverse the pollution of our seas and the death of its creatures. Group memberships in an environmental organization may be considered for the House as a whole.

Householding activities will include role-playing, round robins, or whatever the members want. Nothing is carved in stone, so all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

ON A HUMOUROUS NOTE.....

In the August 20, 1989 issue of the Las Vegas Review Journal I found an ad for dinner and a show at the Rivera Hotel. What was so funny to me was one choice of meals:

KADY'S Ribs, Chicken or Beef BBQ!

It sure left ME in a state of giggles after reading it!

JACQUELINE'S CORNER

I have been told by St. Martin's Press that the hardcover of DREAMSPY will be out possibly late December or maybe January 1990. Schedules in publishing are always problematic, but I do expect the book will be out this winter. DREAMSPY is the companion novel to THOSE OF MY BLOOD.

I'm now taking orders for DREAMSPY at $21.25, a dollar less than THOSE OF MY BLOOD because it's smaller. The paperbacks for both BLOOD and DREAMSPY are on indefinite delay as St. Martin's hasn't sold the rights yet.

I have no new novel sales to report at this time, though I'm working on an occult historical called PATH OF THE HEARTHFIRE.

At Noreascon, I was told by Jan Burke, the managing editor of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine that they are buying my story AVENTURA. It had been sold to IF MAGAZINE, years ago, the revived IF, but that zine folded without a trace and without publishing the story. For those who wish to be sure not to miss the story, you can subscribe or request single copies (you won't find this on many newsstands) directly from the magazine, POB 11095, Piedmont, CA 94611-9991. Tel. (415) 839-5700.

I have a few other small items on submission here and there, but I really have no idea what's going to happen next or when it might happen as I suddenly find myself in the process of changing agents. I am no longer a Scott Meredith client. At this very moment, I have no idea where I'll end up, but the situation is changing daily. The change of agents might change the publication/distribution profile drastically.

To date, I've never used a pen name, but at the moment I am considering the possibility of marketing some of my material under different bylines.

If that happens, it will be announced in detail in VANTAGE POINT NEWS which is available from me (at PO Box 290, Monsey, NY 10952) for a SASE. (Label the SASE VPN and give the date of the last VPN you've seen. Otherwise, you'll get last year's long pink sheet.)

I'm having mechanical difficulties getting VPN out. I can't set my new IBM and its software to address all the fancy capabilities of my antique printer, so we're probably going to have a format change for VPN. Most of the news to date consists of changes of address for the various 'zine editors, and changes in who is editing what 'zine. A current address list should be available somewhere in this publication, but if you lose touch with any of us, try POB 290, Monsey, NY 10952.

If that doesn't work (and it probably won't in 1992 since my husband will be retiring and we'll probably be moving shortly thereafter), then check the address in my latest book. If that doesn't work, try writing me care of my most recent publisher. Or any sf writer can look up my current address in the SFWA directory which is rarely more than a year out of date. I intend to keep my N3F membership current and be on their address list. I'm listed in a number of Who's Who type publications, so try your local library.

The simplest method is just to keep a SASE on file for VPN because the first thing I'll do after getting settled is get out an issue with my new address -- because I'll be looking for friends in my new locale!

By the way, if any of you know of any really great retirement communities around you, I'd appreciate the info.

Live Long and Prosper,

Jacqueline Lichtenberg

ADDENDUM
