The Tecton Star

The Tecton Star is an Amateur Press Association, or APA. It is dedicated to the Sime~GenTM universe, created by Jacqueline Lichtenberg.

An APA is a form of fanzine produced by and for the members. It is different from regular fanzines because each member creates his or her own 'zine within the overall issue and bears the cost of making the requisite number of copies. These are then sent to the Co-ordinator, who functions as a sort of over-editor, collating the 'zines into issue mailings and sending them back out to members.

This format allows for a much larger latitude of participation than the typical fanzine, since there is less chance that people will feel intimidated by having to submit their works to an editor for possible rejection. APA's generally operate on a fixed schedule of bimonthly or quarterly mailings, whereas regular fanzines tend to publish irregularly as material builds up. This shorter publication cycle also helps maintain the conversation-like aspects of ongoing discussions in an APA.

For a fuller explanation of how this works, take a look at the Tecton Star Policies Sheet .

The Tecton Star was originally planned in the late 1980's by a fan who gafiated shortly thereafter. In 1991, another fan asked about the possibility of reviving it. When Jacqueline Lichtenberg gave the go-ahead, the very first issue of The Tecton Star came out in December of 1991. Since then it has kept fairly well to a bimonthly schedule. Our membership has come and gone over the years, but has remained active.
