Assignment 7:
Show us a pair of "made for each other" enemies,
whose conflict plays out in DEEDS driven by the
protag's subconscious self-sabotage.

Level: Beginner

Untitled story

Beginning:

Sarah winced as another wave of pain shot through
her head. "Ohhh," she groaned.

"Nurse," Sarah heard a male voice say. She felt
a pain in her left arm.

"Why did you do that?" asked another male voice.

"She's not going to be questioned until I say so,
Detective," replied the first male voice.

Sarah drifted off into oblivion.

When she woke again, it was to the bustling of a
nurse adjusting the bedclothes. She blinked in
the light. The nurse left and a short time after
that, a man in a grey jacket, white turtleneck,
and blue jeans entered. He had blond, curly hair,
blue eyes, and a nice smile. He pulled a badge
out of his pocket and said, "I'm Detective Adams,
Miss..."

"Swope. Sarah Swope."

Detective Adams replaced his badge and pulled out
a notebook and pen. He eased his tall form into
a chair by the bed and crossed his legs. "What
can you tell me about what happened?"

"Happened?" Sarah was studying his shoes. Grey
suede, clean, and neatly tied. She raised her
gaze to his face.

"Some fishermen found you in Lake Anna, beaten and
nearly dead. What I need to know is what you
remember about your attacker."

Sarah frowned. She was in the lake? And had been
beaten? "I...I don't remember."

A man in a white coat entered the rom. "Detective
Adams, what are you doing here?" he asked.

"Questioning Miss Swope."

The doctor approached the bed. "Miss Swope has been
throught a terrible ordeal. She is not up to
questioning."

1/8 point: Detective Adms discovers someone has
searched Sarah's apartment.

1/4 point: Doctor Matthews (the doctor in the
beginning scene) hynotizes Sarah and instructs her
not to tell Adams or anyone else but him whatever
she remembers about being attacked. He transfers
her to a private room.

1/2 point: Sarah remembers her attacker and why she
was attacked and asks to see Dr. Matthews. As she
starts to tell him her tale, she falters. Dr.
Matthews gets impatient with her and hypnotizes her
again. He gets her to tell him where she put the
coded list she stole from a neighbor's bathroom
cabinet. He tells her to forget all that she told
him and to not be so nosy in the future. He tells
her to go to sleep and leaves.

3/4 point: Dr. Matthews telling her not to be nosy
triggers a dream. Sarah's mother is crying and
six year old Sarah asks why. Mother tells her to
go to bed but Sarah can't sleep. She goes to Mother's
room but can't wake her up. An empty medicine bottle
is on the nightstand. Sarah wakes up. She remembers
everything. She sneaks into Dr. Matthew's office
and finds his home address.

END: Sarah goes to Dr. Matthews' empty house and
finds a way in. She looks for evidence of the
coded list and finds other evidence of Dr. Matthews'
wrongdoing. She calls Detective Adams and tells him
where she is. Dr. Matthews shows up and makes her
hang up the phone. She gets away from him. He
tries to kill her but Adams arrives and kills
Matthews. The coded list he has leads to evidence
about other crimes.

Sarah realizes why she was so nosy and remembering
with an adult perspective realizes that even if
she'd known what made her mother want to kill
herself, she still couldn't have helped.

THE END
