Fourteen year old Kiel is a dreamer who likes to
draw his dreams, an impractical skill for a poor
farm boy expected to follow in his father's
footsteps. He loves to sneak peeks at pulp
magazines and comics whenever he goes to town
with his father.

Kiel wants to enter an art contest he sees in
a comic where the first prize is a scholarship
to a school for young gifted artists.

But there is an entrance fee, which Kiel's father
won't give him because "There ain't no money in
makin' pictures."

Kiel decides to try to win the entrance fee by
placing first in the state fair art show.
