The first line on the first page illustrates the goal and subsequent conflict of the entire novel. The Gunslinger chases the Man in Black throughout, catching up with him only at the very end.
Note: Although this novel appeared in print well after SK's career was established, it was written in the very beginning of his career, as mentioned in the Afterward.
