Finding the Beginning

DragonFlight
Anne McCaffrey

F'lar's driving goal is to preserve Pern from the Threads. His opponents in that goal are (aside from Thread itself) the Lord Holders - and the lack of a suitable candidate for the Queen egg.
The first scene of Dragonflight has F'lar and his half-brother F'nor arriving at the main hold of Fax, the most obstructive of the Lord Holders, searching for a suitable Queenrider candidate.

During the course of the novel, F'lar finds that the very things he sought in a Queenrider - courage, fire, strength of will and stubborness - cause him problems. His Queenrider is not willing to do things just because she is told to, and this resistance and stubborness puts the safety of Pern at risk. Ultimately, these qualities (in the form of Lessa, a secondary protagonist of the novel) are the salvation of Pern - proving F'lar right.

His main opponent, however, remains the Lord Holders - he has to kill Fax to achieve his goals, find suitable Lords for the Holds Fax had held, and convince the Lord Holders to assist him in the defence of Pern.

The book opens with the beginning of F'lar's active attempt to save Pern - finding the Queenrider, and confronting the worst of the Lord Holders.
