Question 5
Kelsey watched the basketball arc gracefully towards the net. It hit the rim and like her life during the past three years, swirled in an endless circle.
The gym class was almost over and as Kelsey drew her whistle to her lips, the door at the end of the gymnasium crashed open. An explosion echoed through the hallway.
Kelsey and her students watched as two men in dark pants and shirts slammed the door shut and struggled to block the door with a Stairmaster and an exercise bike.
Kelsey ran towards the corner of the gym and the blocked door. She overheard one of the men say that it was a cop that had shot at them. Brushing by one of the players, Kelsey almost tripped over her own feet, her running shoes squeaking to a sudden halt. A tall, lanky teenager turned to her, sweat pouring down his forehead. His eyes were opened wide, red veins criss-crossing like dough on a strudel. His jersey changed from a dull yellow to a bright red and he dropped to his knees. She tried to hold him up but they both fell to the ground, his breath wheezing like a die-hard smoker.
One of the men dressed in black cursed under his breath and ran to Kelsey and the boy. "This has gone down all wrong," he whispered to himself. He examined the boy, quickly finding the hole that the blood was pumping from. The other boys began milling around their fallen team-mate and the man grabbed a towel from one of the other boy's hands. He pressed it tight to the wound and grabbed Kelsey's wrist, placing her hand on the towel. "You need to keep pressure on the wound and don't let him move. Underst and?"
Kelsey struggled to draw in her breath, the sight of the blood almost causing her to faint. She nodded, drawing in her strength, bringing herself under control. "He needs a doctor…and who the heck are you?"
He looked into her brown eyes, momentarily distracted by their rich colour and sparkle. "I'm a cop. Is there a telephone?"
Kelsey pointed to her gym bag. "Over there."
The man had long, black hair and it bounced gently over his shoulders as he sprinted to the bag. He was just over six feet tall and his square shoulders tapered to a thin waist.
He reached into the bag, moving aside an assortment of cosmetics, brushes, tissues and hygiene packets, before finding the cell phone. He punched 911 and raised the phone to his ear. Looking over to Kelsey, he followed her slender arm up to her straight brown hair. Her eyes were almond shaped, set above high cheekbones. "A boy has been shot at Fullertown high school. He's in the gymnasium and needs medical attention, now!"
He pressed the buttons again. "John, the drug bust fell apart. A boy has been shot and I've been set-up. What's going on?"
"Derek, I just got word from the District Officer. Detective Higgins is in charge and he's at the school now. I'm switching you to him."
"John, don't…". Derek closed the phone before the connection was made.
Derek moved over to Kelsey. "Look, my partner and I have to get out of here. How many exits are there?"
Kelsey looked at him. "You're a cop and outside there are cops, shooting at you. Somehow two plus two doesn't equal four."
He looked at his watch. "The medical team should be here any moment." Derek placed his hand on the boy's shoulder. "Hang in there. It shouldn't be much longer," he said with a smile.
Derek kneeled beside her and his eyes caught her eyes. For an instant he thought of a tropical island, warm sand and the sound of the waves tumbling onto the beach. In his vision, he was holding her hand, walking, their feet pressing into the wet sand.
"We're working undercover." Derek nodded in the direction of the man by the door. "He's from the local office and I'm from Washington. There was a major drug bust going down in the school yard but something fell apart."
The telephone beeped.
Derek answered. "No he can't walk. No, nobody comes through that door except the emergency team."
Detective Higgins spoke. "You're not in charge, Derek. Come out with Terry and let's make sure nobody else gets hurt."
Kelsey watched as Derek walked to the other man. Derek didn't look like a cop; in fact he looked more what she imagined a drug dealer to look like. However, there was something in his eyes that sent a warm shiver through her.
She stroked beads of sweat off the boy's forehead as his blood dried on her hand.
The phone rang again. "The medical team is here. Step out now and they'll go in. If you don't come out, I'll give you two minutes until we break in."
"Higgins, the S.W.A.T. team has to be there by now, put me in contact with the team leader."
He hissed into the phone. "I'm your only contact and those are my terms."
"Kelsey, we have to get out of here fast. We're dead men unless you help us."
Derek motioned at one of the boys and he replaced Kelsey's hand, with the boy's hand, on the wound.
"I'm not going anywhere with you. For all I know you're one of the drug dealers," she said.
He pleaded. "We don't have any time left. Those guys are going to break in here and start shooting. One kid is down and there'll be more. You don't have a choice, you've got to trust me."
She thought how quickly her safe world had crashed down, the balance of life so easily tipped. "Through the women's shower and dressing room. That's the only exit that may be safe."
"My car is on the other side of the school, is yours nearby?"
She ignored Derek for the moment and addressed her class. "Guys, I have to go. Everybody just sit on the floor and wait for the police to come in. Don't get up…don't even move."
She snatched her gym bag and they slipped through the door marked with the 'Ladies' sign. High-pitched screams resounded off the walls, as several of the girls in various states of dress saw the two men. They broke into the hallway and ran towards the nearest door. A loud voice from behind ordered them to halt, followed by thundering footsteps.
The sun blazed in their eyes as they dashed out, Kelsey looking to the left and then to the right.
"Please tell me you know where you parked your car?" stated Derek, with a hint of panic.
"Derek, you go on ahead and I'll slow them down a little," said the other man.
"No, Terry. We're a team, we stick together."
"We don't know who is who and one of us has to get out of here. Go with her Derek. This is not negotiable."
Derek held Kelsey's arm lightly. "Left or right…up or down. But let's get the heck outta here."
Kelsey dashed off to the left, Derek at her heels. She stopped at a red, mid-size car and she fumbled in her bag, searching for her keys.
Derek rolled his eyes, wondering what her purse must be like. "We are in a bit of a hurry," he stated with a hint of sarcasm.
"I'm looking…I'm looking."
They slid into the car and drove through the lot.
"Go slow, we don't need any extra attention right now."
Kelsey peered up ahead. "The exit is blocked. Now what," she said calmly.
"Step on it. Let's get outta here."
Her tires squealed on the hot pavement as her feet pressed the clutch and the gas pedal and her hand shifted through the gears. As the car sped towards the barrier, the news media focused their cameras on her and her passenger. She couldn’t hide her face and she knew she had to run and hide again.
The car broke through the barrier and sped off to the sounds of pursuing sirens.
