Joe Doran - Artistic Resume

Joe has been active in theatre for more than a decade. He has worked with Pulitzer and Tony Award winning playwright/screenwriters Frank D. Gilroy (The Subject Was Roses) and David Rabe (Hurlyburly, The Firm, Streamers). He directed the first New York production of Mr. Rabe's unpublished play, Cosmologies, starring Michael Williams (The Blair Witch Project). In 1996 and 1997, he produced and directed staged readings for the Hudson Valley Film Festival, featuring actors including Dennis Farina, Charles Durning, Joanna Kerns (Growing Pains), Dan Lauria (The Wonder Years), and others. He has co-founded two highly regarded theatre companies, High Window Theatre and Passionplace, and has acted, written and/or directed with many other theatres in the region, including River Arts (prod. Michael Cristofer). Joe is a Vassar College Powerhouse alumni, where he studied with Jon Robin Baitz.

ARTISTIC CREDITS/HISTORY

JAN-OCT 1999—Creator and Writer of nationally broadcast SPECTER Radio Series

Developed and wrote original radio series, THE SPECTER, currently being produced by San Francisco's Shoestring Radio Theatre. Episodes of the show will be aired on 109 public radio affiliates in 34 states. THE SPECTER was also featured in October 1999 on BBC 4 radio in London, on the program "A World in Your Ear", which according to producer Arlene Gregorius, showcases the best English-language from around the world.

AUG 1998--Co-Founder High Window Theatre

Dedicated to producing challenging new and modern works by American playwrights, High Window Theatre premiered at Poughkeepsie's Vassar Institute Theatre in August with David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross. The Times Herald Record rated the production "an A+ for its realistic and dramatic intensity…powerful and biting, this production serves the author well…".

OCT 1997--Wrote original teleplay, TWICE LOVED, optioned by John Ritter's Adam Productions

Conceived and wrote original teleplay, optioned by Adam Productions for actor John Ritter.

JUN 1997--Producer and Artistic Director of Passionplace Theatre, which presented four staged screenplay readings at the 1997 Hudson Valley Film Festival

Oversaw all artistic aspects of staged readings which featured Dennis Farina, Charles Durning, Joanna Kerns, Ken Topolsky, Christopher Noth, Robin Strasser, Frank D. Gilroy and other noted actors and writers.

JUN 1997--Director, staged reading of RUNNING WILD, screenplay by Frank D. Gilroy, for the 1997 HV Film Festival.

Worked with the Pulitzer-Prize winning author, directing a staged reading featuring actors Dan Lauria, Richard Zavaglia, Dahlia Salem, Brian Gaskill, Bryan Michael McGuire and Don Most.

DEC 1996--Director, COSMOLOGIES, by David Rabe, for Passionplace Theatre

Worked with Tony award-winning playwright, directing a regional production of his new unpublished play, at the Julien J. Studley Theatre, SUNY New Paltz, NY. Garnered an outstanding review from the regional newspaper, The Woodstock Times.

JUN 1996--Director, staged reading of DESPERADOES, screenplay by David Rabe, for the 1996 HV Film Festival

Worked with Mr. Rabe in staging a specially adapted version of his screenplay for the HV Film Festival.

1992-1997--Co-founder and Artistic Director, Passionplace Theatre

Responsible for defining artistic vision of the company, choosing and developing plays, hiring directors and technical crew, and casting actors. Wrote and designed press releases, brochures, posters and programs. Managed rehearsal schedules, press contacts and interviews, etc. Passionplace productions have earned Best Play, Best Actor, and Best Actress accolades from the region's largest newspapers, including The Times Herald Record and The Woodstock Times.

1989-92--Director/Writer/Actor, Various Theatres

Worked with regional theatres including Vassar Powerhouse, River Arts Repertory, SUNY New Paltz Summer Rep, The Stonehill Theatre Project, Common Stage, etc. Highlights: performed in Waiting for Godot at the International Festival of Café Theatre, in Nancy, France; performed in The Lisbon Traviata at The Egg in Albany.

1990--Playwriting Apprentice, Vassar Powerhouse Theatre/New York Stage and Film

Studied with playwright Jon Robin Baitz in Vassar's renowned intensive summer theatre program.
