CuteFTP is a Windows based File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client that allows
users to utilize the capabilities of FTP without having to know all the
details of the protocol itself. CuteFTP™ gives novice PC users the ability to
upload, download and edit files on remote FTP servers around the world.
Double-click the CuteFTP™ icon to start the program. The first window to
display, Site Manager, contains the server information for connecting to your
favorite sites. From Site Manager, you may add new sites, edit existing
sites or delete sites no longer used.
General Site Manager Settings
The following information is required when adding a new site.
Site Label. Enter a name for the site.
Host Address. Enter the address of the host server (provided by your ISP.)
If you type a password in the Password box, the Normal radio button will
automatically be selected. When Normal is checked, the server will require a
unique User ID and Password to login.
Editing a Site
Existing sites may be modified at any time. To edit a site, do the following:
1 From the Menu Bar, click on FTP/Site Manager.
2 Select a folder (click on the name) from the list showing in the left
window of the FTP Site Manager Screen.
3 Select a site from the list showing in the right window.
4 Click the 'Edit Site' button. When the Edit Host screen appears, make your
changes. Click the 'Apply' and 'OK' buttons to accept your changes or click
the 'Cancel' button to return to the previous screen without saving changes.
Removing a Site
Sites no longer used can be deleted from Site Manager using the steps below.
1 From the Menu Bar, click on FTP/Site Manager.
2 Select a folder (click on the name) from the list showing in the left
window of the FTP Site Manager Screen.
3 Select a site from the list showing in the right window.
4 Click the 'Delete Site' button.
NOTE: Folders may be added, deleted or renamed by selecting the folder and
clicking on one of the 'Add Folder', 'Delete Folder' or 'Rename Folder'
buttons.
Connecting to an Existing Site
Use Site Manager to connect to an existing site.
1 From the Menu Bar, click FTP/Site Manager.
2 Select a folder (click on the name) from the list showing in the left
window of the FTP Site Manager Screen.
3 Select a site (click on the name) from the list showing in the right
window of the FTP Site Manager Screen.
4 Click the Connect button.
NOTE: After connecting, CuteFTP™ will display a message from the server
administrator informing you of rules and regulations of the server. Click
the OK button at the bottom of that screen to clear the message.
Disconnecting, Reconnecting and Stopping Connections
In the event of a broken connection or the need to stop a process or
connection, users may use any of the following:
To disconnect. From the Menu Bar, click FTP/Disconnect or click the
Disconnect Icon on the Tool Bar, or press the Ctrl and X keys.
To Reconnect. From the Menu Bar, click FTP/Reconnect.
Stopping a Connection. From the Menu Bar, click Command/Stop or press
the 'F9' key or press the 'Stop' button on the Tool Bar.
Stopping a Transfer. From the Menu Bar, click Commands/Stop or press the
F9 key or press the 'Stop' button on the Tool Bar.
Manually Getting a File
Use this function to download a specific file if you know its exact directory
location.
1 From the Menu Bar, click on Commands/Manual Get.
2 Type in the path of the file to be downloaded. and click the 'OK' button.
CuteFTP™'s Main Screen
The Main Screen is used to transfer files to and from remote servers and is
divided into four windows: An upper window, two center windows, and a lower
window.
Upper Window The log window displays the commands you give CuteFTP™ and the
server's responses. CuteFTP™ logs this information to inform you of
completed transactions or to assist in troubleshooting.
Center Left Window (Local). The local window displays the selected directory
from your hard-drive.
Center Right Window (Remote). The remote window displays the files and
directories of the server you are connected to.
Lower Window (Queue). The queue window is used for temporary storage of files
you wish to transfer at a later time.
Transferring made easy
Use the CuteFTP™ Connection Wizard for an easy, step-by-step guide to adding
a site. You may activate the option to connect to the new site automatically
when CuteFTP™ is started. Once connected, pick up with Step 9 below.
1 Open the 'Site Manager'
2 Click once on any folder on the left
3 Click on 'Add Site'
4 Fill in the 'Site Label' with whatever you choose to name the site
5 Put your FTP host address in the 'Host Address' field
6 Type your User ID and Password in the respective fields
7 Click OK (don't worry about the right side for now)
8 Click on 'Connect' (make sure you are connected to the Internet, first)
9 Locate the file of choice on the left side of CuteFTP™ (if you don't see
the file, follow Step 10, if you see the file, skip 10 and go to 12)
10 Press Ctrl-D. Click on browse. This will allow you to find the folder
that has your file on your PC
11 Click on OK
12 Now drag your file from the left side to the right side. You will get
prompted to upload the file, click on 'Yes'
13 After the upload, you will see the file on the right hand side
You are done. You have just uploaded your first file.
