This is book two to the new series by Jay Roycraft. Alek Dragovitch known as the enforcer has been sent on a loathsome assignment. He knows not to irritate la directrice, but it seems not matter what he does it irritates her. When she is irritated she sends Alek a.k.a l'enforcier on assignments that are beneath him. Any enforcer could do this job but since he was sent he is eager to get this done and over with. Drago, must decide the fate of a lowly aberration, a dhampire. Dhampire's are by products of a vampire and human relationship. They are considered the lowest form of life and are hated by vampires. They are also considered a threat and thus are watched carefully. It seems that Dhampires have the power to track down vampires and they tend to grow up and become vampire killers. Any and all that show that tendency are killed. All are monitored for behavior showing just such a tendency. Marya of course knows this meeting is coming though she doesn't know with whom. Marya is fully prepared to die knowing that dhampires are hated and usually put to death. This has limited what she could do in her life. Knowing she may die she has kept away from any love interests and even from her own people. Marya is a gypsy and doesn't fit well with the normal person, but she is also cut off from her own people because of her heritage. Though Marya was prepared for this day she wasn't prepared for l'enforcier or his decision after their meeting. Instead of death he grants her life, at least that is what he tells her. What he doesn't tell her is that he is only granting her life to irritate Nikolena better known as la directrice. Exulted over being granted life Marya begins making plans for the rest of her life. Though that quickly comes to an end when a vampire by the name of Revelin Scott shows up giving her notice that she has been flagged for termination and she has two weeks to sort out her affairs. Angry at this change Marya lures Drago to her house and attempts to murder him. This is where the real action begins. Drago never ordered Marya's termination. It seems there is something afoul. Drago being a man of his word takes Marya with him on his journey to find the culprit that forged a termination order in his name. Much more is at work then just this termination. It seems there are traitors in the ranks of the vampire. Ones that want to achieve the death of Drago, la derectrice and to become leaders themselves. During his investigations Drago turns up many things, not the least of which his growing feelings for Marya. Yet this can't be, a vampire falling for an aberration? Not possible is it? There are many issues to be dealt with. Like the fact of who are traitors and who are loyal. Drago, Marya, Revelin Scott and many more almost find their deaths in this story. There are many adventures and a few twists to be read. I was very intrigued from beginning to end. I personally enjoyed this book even more then the first one. |
