This is book 6 of Nancy Gideon's Midnight series. In this instance I feel that reading the previous books may have been more of a hindrance than a help. I pretty much knew the background of the returning characters, and much knew what to expect, form each and the behaviors they exhibited. Stacy Kimbell has made friends in many unusual places. One of them For instance is in the coroners' office. He gives Stacy a call, when a very unusual murder victim is brought into the morgue. This victim seems to have some very unusual traces of blood under her nails. Since this is her field of research this peeks Stacy's interest. Stacy does research on blood disorders and takes samples of the woman's blood. Stacy's findings are very unusual, more samples are found under the woman's fingernails as well as strange marks on her neck. An even stranger thing is this is not the only person with these marks to be brought in recently. It seems whomever is killing these women has some very unusual blood. The blood from the killer could very well be the key to curing many diseases, like AIDS, the one that killed Stacy's mother. Or the blood disease that Stacy herself has. These diseases are the reason Stacy got into blood research. Although on the surface Stacy seems to be only concerned for her career and a not so nice person, looks may be deceiving. Stacy isn't as unfeeling as she seems to be. There is much more to Stacy's personality then meets the eye. Stacy is driven to find the owner of the unusual blood. Where the trail leads her is a surprise. Stacy is led directly to Louis Redman, a rich importer, and publicity shy recluse. Unfortunately it also seems that the person who the blood belongs to is also the person that is killing these people. Stacy must decide if this is a person she wants to deal with. Stacy must decide if her research and goal is worth giving up her morals. Should she tell the police her suspicions about Louis? Her trail did lead directly to him and that trail did come from the blood found on the victims. If Stacy's deductions are correct what she is dealing with something very weird. According to Stacy's deductions she is dealing with a vampire, but that's ridiculous. Or is it? Could vampires actually exist? Stacy decides to keep investigating before deciding on whether to turn him and her findings over to the police or not. Stacy must eventually come to terms with Louis and her suspicions. Louis wants Stacy to help him become human again but in return that means letting Stacy know what he really is. Louis swears that he isn't the one killing all these women. Stacy and Louis come to a strained working agreement. Louis will provide blood for Stacy to test, but can Stacy trust a vampire? Unfortunately Harper the people Stacy works for has gotten wind of her blood research and takes control. They move her downstairs to a restricted area as well as give her an escort/bodyguard. Something Stacy isn't very happy about. How is Stacy supposed to continue with her research undisturbed while being watched? And if Louis isn't doing the killings then that means there is another vampire in the area. Who could that be, and why is he killing women and making it look like Louis is doing the killings? Is Stacy really so determined to find a cure for blood diseases because of her mother's death or is there another hidden reason? Will Louis finally find someone that can make him human again or will he have to remain a vampire forever? The answers to all these questions will keep you engrossed in this book to the end. |
