While this book was a bit different than the first two books, it
definitely did not detract from the quality of the book.
Having been taking care of her little brother from the time of their
parent's death has left Alexandria Houton for very little time or money of her
own. Since she has been his sole support since their parent's deaths she feels
totally responsible for his welfare, and has been doing a great job of taking
care of him. Alexandria has met a force of evil she alone can't protect him
from. That force of evil is in the form of a Carpathian turned vampire.
Unknown to Alexandria he wants her for his mate. She has no idea that she is
psychic and therefore a possible lifemate for a Carpathian. Or for that matter
she doesn't even know there are Carpathians.
This vampire manages to not only capture Alex, but he takes her brother
also. Alex must allow herself to begin the conversion to Carpathian via the
vampire's blood, in order to save the life of her brother. Problem is that
because this is a vampire converting Alex she herself could become a vampire
like he is.
Aiden Savage is in the area and senses the presence of Alex and the
vampire. Aiden is not only a Carpathian, he is also a vampire hunter, he finds
them and kills the vampire then turns his attention to Alexandria. He partakes
of Alex's blood in order to kill her so she doesn't become a rogue vampire like
the one who captured her. That's the realization hits him that he is seeing
colors which would make Alex his true lifemate. There is only one thing left
to do, transfuse Alex with his own blood in hopes that it will neutralize the
terrible effects of the vampire's blood.
Once Aiden has done this he takes Alex and her brother to his home to keep
an eye on her. He wants to be sure she doesn't become a mindless killer. Not
to mention the fact that he is her lifemate. Unfortunately the vampire was not
the only one that has felt Alex's presence. There are other vampires and
Carpathians in the area that want to claim Alex. The only way for Aiden to
protect Alex is to keep her as near to him as possible. How better than to
keep her in his house, but how is he going to convince Alex of that? Although
Aiden does seem to be able to get her brother on his side Alex is much harder
to convince. Not only does Aiden have to convince Alex that he can only
protect her if she is near but he has to convince her that she needs
protection, not to mention the fact of convincing her that she is his lifemate,
or that she is now a Carpathian.
Being the strong willed person she is acceptance of all this does not come
to Alex easily. Will she ever accept it? Will she ever be able to deal with
what she has become?
Worst what will happen if Aiden isn't able to convince Alex that she
really is his lifemate? Will Aiden turn rogue and have to be hunted down? Or
will he be saved through Alex, or will she ultimately reject him?
These are definitely questions that make the book worth reading. As with
all of Christine's books I loved it.
