Angela and Gilbert fell in love very quickly when they met while she was working at a museum and he came in to see a professor. They seemed like the perfect couple and very happy. At least they were before he left her at his father's house and went off to Egypt for an archaeological expedition within a month after their marriage. Gilbert fell ill and had to return not long after he left. The Gilbert the left wasn't the Gilbert that came back. They were like two different people. This Gilbert was pale, ill and very aloof. He had moved his sleeping quarters in the room next to Angela's using his illness as an excuse. According to Gilbert and Professor Miller the man he went on the expedition with, Gilbert needed to sleep during the day now. For some reason the daylight had ill effects on his health. Adding insult to injury Gilbert brought a pretty Egyptian girl of royal descent and her servant back with him and set her up in his father's house with quarters of his own. Angela seldom saw Gilbert. He was always tied up with the Professor and the Princess in the basement with the crates they brought back. Strange attacks began to happen in the village. Young women were being attacked and their throats were being bitten. Angela begins to suspect that Gilbert and the girl are somehow involved in the attacks. They hadn't started until their arrival and Angela never sees either Gilbert or the girl during the day. All the attacks happened about Midnight. Angela has no idea what she is up against. What ties does her husband have to this Egyptian? Is she of royal descent or is she actually the royalty? What are the secrets she has and is she a vampire? Is Gilbert somehow her servant, or is he too a vampire? Why does the professor dislike Angela so much? What is his part in all this? Last of all will Angela find a way to get the old Gilbert back or is he gone forever? Like many of the older gothic vampire books I found this a bit of a slow read. This gives no real confirmation as to whether there really was a vampire or what the true reason behind Angela's husband's personality changes were. |
