Stefan is an author as well as a father that has survived not only the seemingly violent death of his only child, but the break up of his marriage as well. Stefan is at a book convention selling his daughters possessions to the people she loved most and the ones that would most care for them. Stefan meets a strange fellow that asks him to meet him one night, a fellow calls himself Dimitri and dresses as a vampire, but of course that is what this whole convention is about, being what you are not. Or is he really a vampire? Stefan meets Dimitri at his house. Not only does he meet Dimitri but he meets Miquel. That is when the truth hits him, these people don't just think that they are vampires, they really are vampires. Stefan talks to Dimitri and Miquel and finally he agrees to the change. Really why shouldn't he what has he got left? His child and marriage are both dead, so why not? Although at the last moment Stefan puts up a fight it is already to late and he is changed into a vampire. It seems that becoming a vampire isn't all that much different. At least in terms of what is real and isn't. At first Stefan is told there is no heaven or hell, no afterlife and that god doesn't even exist. Then he is told heaven is there but it is empty. But without hell how can there be heaven? Without God or a hereafter how can heaven be there but empty? These are all complexities to the story that show when it comes to creation and the ever after there are actually no answers. It seems that is what a lot of the vampires dedicate their undead lives to, to try and find some of these answers. But will they? Are there even any answers? There are many things that Miquel neglected to tell Stefan before the change like the dream. The dream is what a vampire must have every night for eternity. He must relive the night of his death for the rest of his time on earth. Another thing Miquel neglected to tell Stefan is the love hate relationship that goes on between a vampire and his creator. As a vampire Stefan learns many things about himself and the other vampires in the house. Seems that another thing that Miquel is the one who killed his daughter. So now Stefan must go through his vampire life hating but at the same time loving his creator and his daughters' killer at the same time. How can he possibly love the man who killed his daughter? How can he come to terms with this dilemma? How can he not hate Miquel? There seems to be quite a lot of things vampires need to learn. One thing they do learn though is that vampire love is much more intense then human love and much more intricate. The love of a vampire tends to transcend gender although the genders to tend to live separate from each other. The males seem to have their residence and life and the females theirs, and the females don't all seem to be as find of Miquel. One female in particular seems to have a lethal grudge against Miquel. A grudge that eventually leads to the death of an innocent. Although the book is unique in its way of looking at vampires and their turmoil's it may not be for everyone. Many will find the uniqueness alluring, there are some very erotic scenes with same gender vampires that may be objectionable to some. I personally didn't have a problem with it. The book was due to the complexities a bit of a slower read for me. |
