Back in 1960, Dr. E. M. Jellineck wrote a book entitled The Disease Concept of Alcoholism. In Love and Sobriety, John Wiley (a pseudonym to preserve the privacy that AA requires) tells a tale of one man’s battle with this disease and the ultimate victory as he becomes a recovering alcoholic.
As the daughter of an alcoholic, I could relate to this story in many ways. How I wish it could have been written in the 50s when I was growing up. How much easier life could have been.
Kudos to Mr. Wiley (whoever he is) for a much-needed treatise on a very misunderstood disease. May he continue to recover and inspire others to do the same.
