| It seems that while a sugar cane field is being burned, egrets are attracted to the flames and continually fly into them. Thus, the title of the novel.
Egrets to the Flames is the story of one sugar cane family, the Hamptons, dysfunctional family extraordinaire! It follows the life of James Henry, the patriarch, through bad times and good. There is a mixture of tragedy and temptation that sweeps the reader up and never allows them to stem the tide until the very last line of the book.
The characters are intricately evolved, and the reader will find her- or himself at times booing and at times cheering the male protagonist. Whether you like him or not, this novel pivots around James Henry and his family, his continuing affair with his best friend’s wife, and, to be blunt, the youngest son, who is bound to self-destruct.
Once you pick it up, Barbara Anton’s latest novel will be impossible to put down. This is a must read! | | |
