| Percival Marlow, a brilliant astrophysicist is dying slowly of old age and disease. Carl Dorning is a neurosurgeon who is obsessed with prolonging the lives of people he believes are worthy of saving from death. To do so he is willing to sacrifice the lives of those he deems worthless. This is a modern-day version of the Frankenstein plot.
In the course of the novel, we become initimately familiar with the lives of the main characters-- their personality, their motivations and aspiration, their backgrounds. The morality is not always clear. If you're like me, you'll do some flip-flops as you read. In the end, though, I think we will agree with the ending.
While not exactly earth-shaking, this is a wonderful short novel that shows what good science fiction can be. The author takes pseudoscience with a ring of authenticity and mixes the plot with some believable characters that the reader can identify with. This is a very good example of near-future sf. | | |
