| The Florida swampland. It is the home of dangerous beasts, denegerate humans, ancient curses and -- the Seminole legend, Spirit-Mother. Suwanee is terrified of the swamp that borders her land. Her father, brother, and grandfather died there. Now she begins to have horribly real nightmares and premontions. The swamp is reaching out for her. Her ex-husband, Michael, is a volatile, passionate, Native American orphan raised by a white family. He is strong, handsome, and often abusive.
Michael is jealously posessive of Suwanee despite their recent divorce and remains convinced that she will come back to him. His foster brother, Derry, is Suwanee's best friend and confidante. Derry secretly loves Suwanee but won't admit it, even to himself; because he also loves his brother. But Michael suspects.
This leads to a confrontation among the three of them. In the aftermath, Derry and Suwanee leave for their separate homes. Michael is drawn to the swamp by Spirit-Mother, who grants him the power to shapeshift into a panther. He is exhilirated and enthralled by the sense of freedom it gives him. Its influence drives him to the edge of his sanity and perhaps beyond. When Spirit-Mother takes the power away, he is devastated. The evil swamp entity demands that he provide her with a sacrifice - Suwanee - to appease the curse made by Suwanee's ancestors. The task digusts him until Spirit-Mother promises to return the power if he will only obey.
Will the desire for the power be too hard for him to resist? Then what will Derry and Suwanee do?
Adra Steia writes in fast-paced, stream-lined prose, using the barest minimum of description and background detail needed. She thereby engages the reader's imagination to the point where the story becomes almost interactive. This is a well-crafted psychological study of abuse, sibling rivalry, and unrequitable love.
Publisher's caveat - this story is written in a genre designated as VooDoo Moon. This is defined as being outside the realm of so-called "acceptable" rules. These are the darkest of the dark and sometimes twisted. May contain romantic elements, with or without eroticism. Definitely do not always have happy endings.
