| Whether you're in middle school or an adult, I think you'll find this story interesting. It is very well-written and -crafted.
Jenna is between seventh and eighth grade, having recently moved from Monroe to Tacoma, WA, to live with her grandparents. Her father is in prison, having killed a man. Jenna's mother is ashamed of this and hides it from everyone outside her family. She has instruceted Jenna and her brother to keep quiet about it and not share the information with their friends. Speaking of friends, they haven't had much time to make new ones in Tacoma. Jenna's brother is too young to worry about such things, but Jenna is at an age where friendship is important. A few girls from her new school express some interest in staying in touch with her through summer vacation.
The book is about the way in which Jenna copes with keeping secrets and making new friends. She does a lot of growing up during those few summer months. She learns what's important in life and what's not.
The book is well written to teach a young reader about life and about good English. But it's also interesting enough to be entertaining for anyone to read. | | |
