This book is an excellent resource for anyone who would use media related information in their own creative endeavors. Typical users of this guide would be authors, website designers, producers of films and television, magazine or book publishers, and editors. Written in understandable English by a Harvard educated entertainment and business attorney, it is an easily comprehensible legal reference book to obtaining rights and permissions for use of other people’s work in your own projects. Examples of what you might want to utilize in your own projects include, but are not limited to, photographs, quotations, musical excerpts, or text passages from books or magazines.

Set up as a reference book, it gives sample situations and examples of what is known as “fair use.” Copyright holders of music, artworks, film clips, trade names, and other “protected materials” must grant permission before you may legally use such materials in your own creations. This book guides you through the processes required to obtain clearance of rights. Well thought out and seeming to cover most issues, I would recommend this reference as an all-in-one to sit on your desk and refer to during project planning stages, rather than seeking out bits of information through websites which may not be accurate.

The book also gets the novice permission seeker ideas on what types of clearance might be needed for the project at hand, getting you to think of the many possibilities and problems that must be overcome before your own project can progress. After all, who wants to be sued for improper use of others’ materials?

Sample documents, permission forms and other useful information is part of an extensive fifty-page appendix.
