She feels no compunction about using blackmail to keep Justin Stormcloud from applying for the position in her sister's department. She's about to jet off to a two-day conference in Nevada, and his seeming surrender is the icing on the cake. When she finds out her conference is cancelled, Victoria is annoyed. She hates to waste company money; so she talks her half-sister, Caroline, into going in her stead.
Caroline arrives at the hotel prepared for a weekend of debauchery and to make up for the dry spell her love life has endured lately. She figures she'll have to do a bit of searching for the right man for her weekend plans. She definitely doesn't expect to find a man so conveniently waiting for her when she emerges from the shower; and he's waiting with restraints on the bed, intent on teaching "Victoria" a lesson about open-mindedness. Even when she gets him to realize she isn't her sister, Justin continues with his plans of erotic torture and bondage. Not that she's running away kicking and screaming at the thought. Things go well throughout the weekend, with Caro managing to get the best of Justin. As the end of their idyll approaches, they both begin to wonder if there is a future for them.
Payback is a steamy read, bringing a light-hearted sense of fun not expected in the BDSM genre. There is no pain in this book (well, maybe a little that's consensual), and it's all about control—surrendering and taking it. I do wish the characters and plot had been more detailed. The erotic elements of the book overshadowed the storyline, and the characters fell flat in places, but it's still an enjoyable book. Payback was this reviewer's first experience reading BDSM, and it was a good choice to test the waters. Ms. Lapthorne's writing is fun and light, good for an entertaining hour or two. | | |
