| A Bitter Pleasure is a collection of short stories by an up and coming young writer who deals in raw emotional realities and surprising insight. Not only do the stories etch images in your mind that are not easily erased, the stories also speak to you about vices and how to overcome them.
The lead story, "A Bitter Pleasure", is about a man who becomes infatuated and then obsessed with the Neon Goddess, a low deity that usurps men’s power; and the man slowly loses himself in her. However, he is warned along the way. But does he listen? You’ll have to read it to find out!
The first story, "I Am Beautiful", is a mother/daughter tale filled with the realities of urban life – the pain and the pleasure of it – but the ending will haunt and surprise you.
N. K. Ra is a superb story-teller. While this work has the signs of a new writer, the prolific nature of his imagery, the depth of character, and the way one is drawn into the story definitely compensate for any lacks.
A Bitter Pleasure is a must-read for those who want to experience – almost first hand – what it is like to walk in the shoes of an urban American. | | |
