Price: $10.00 | The Way of the Wolf II is a continuation of the trilogy beginning here with the wedding of Cassadara and Makakao, Lord Yarishet. This part of the trilogy revolves around Seanen, a former thief, now a trusted member of Lady Lochinvar's household and member of the Royal Guard, and the small in comparison to the huge Northlander, soft and delicate Yarwyn, an ambassador and ranger.
Yarwyn seeks out the handsome big Northlander, Seanen, at the wedding. He, known as a ladies' man, thinks her a child, and shows little interest; but the vibes between them say differently. Nothing like those of a child, they convey instead the strength between two very sexual beings. On assignment to Lady Lochinvar, Yarwyn is told to select her troops to fight against the Orcs; but she choses only one man, Seanen. Together, they lust for each other, love each other, and fight to gain entrance into the castle of the King of the Orcs.
At the castle, they decide to gain entry via a tunnel from the moat, which is inhabited with all kinds of "things"...some dead, some alive. Attacked by a wormlike monster, Seanen fights for his life. Eventually finding its vulnerable spot, he thrusts his head into the creatures windpipe, causing its death. Under water and out of air, Seanen finds himself trapped. It is his fortune to find an escape around the several tons of the dead creature's body, and he surfaces. Yarwyn, thinking Seanen dead, searches for a way out, knowing she must continue on her own. The potion she had taken, turning her skin dark, worked to her advantage when she is discovered by a young Dark Elven male. Because of her ebony skin, he thinks her a priestess and consents to do her bidding of searching the castle without alerting anyone.
Seanen enters the castle kitchen via the waste drain, where Yarwyn is being bathed by a slave girl. As priestess, the Dark Elf enslaves Seanen to Yarwyn. When the opportunity presents itself, Yarwyn slays the Dark Elf with her tiny dagger. After making love, they depart the room to stealthily walk the halls of the castle, seeking the Orc King. The Dark Elf, using his magic, brings himself back to life to complete his mission.
The castle is almost deserted; most of the Orcs are poised to face the Northlanders and Humans standing ready for battle across the moat. In the treasury, the ancient bow, the legend of Nemesis, turns up; and Seanen gives it to Yarwyn to use defensively. Also finding his grandfather's mail, now black with age, he darns it and the tartan of the House of Lindell, vowing to reclaim his grandfather's legacy, avenge his death, and regain his family's honor.
In a fierce fight to the death, he kills the Orc King, beheading him, and throws the head to the troops below. The battle won, Lady Lochinvar beckons Seanen. To honor his bravery and loyalty, she restores his title, his lands, and his wealth, which had been wrongly taken from his family. Behind Lord Makakao's house, they again vow their love.
I found this part of the trilogy confusing. The author never states what the Dark Elf's mission is; if it is to kill Seanen, she does not explain why, nor how he knew him. Also, I found it most unbelievable that the author left the reader hanging as to the WHO was behind the Orc's uprising. | | |
