| A visual treat for both children and parents alike, It’s Springtime in My Backyard was fueled by author Kathy Mazur’s belief that every child has a story to tell. Mazur took the inquisitiveness of a child and combined it successfully with minimal text, vividly colored illustrations, and striking real-life photos. By doing this, she was able to incorporate learning skills in a clever, fun way.
It’s Springtime in My Backyard follows a little girl (actually the author’s daughter, Lauren, who is the inspiration behind this delightful book) as she watches springtime unfold around her and her two special friends . With Molly and Moe, two Mallard ducks that live in her backyard, she watches springtime unfold around her. By combining reading, writing skills, and storytelling, Mazur teaches children to observe and respect both nature and animals.
The author also features interesting facts about Mallard ducks that can be shared with your child after he is finished with the story. I especially liked the added activity at the back of the book that encourages children to look for signs of spring in their own backyards. This could actually be used as the basis for a springtime scavenger hunt. There is also an added treat, a CD of It’s Springtime in My Backyard read by the author’s daughter, Lauren. Another clever way to get your child to read!
It’s Springtime in My Backyard proves that every child indeed possesses the ability and imagination to create a story of his very own. This is a book you will want to share with your child over and over! | | |
