Price: $7 | Music of a Proto-Suicide by Catherynne M. Valente contains some of the most amazing imagery I've ever encountered in one place. I was blown away by the rich texture called up in the very first poem, "Apologia". In it, she speaks of earthy-toed rainwater. I fell in love right then and read on and on. I highly recommend this book to all who look at words as paints, colors used to bring out images in the night. Possibly the only drawback to these awe-inspiring images is that they can be difficult to read in one sitting. "Shantih" was my last poem the first day I began reading. When I returned, I found even more gems of sight within words; and I am very glad to have had the chance to read this book.
I give Music of a Proto-Suicide 5 out of 5 stars. This is the best book of poetry I have read in a very long time and one of the few that I've read that caused me to think when I walked away (and consult old Latin textbooks to see if I was recalling words correctly). I will definitely read it again; and that is the highest praise I can give any book, poetry or not. | | |
