| A collection of brief biographical sketches of 25 ordinary people who overcame great obstacles in order to attain their extraordinary dreams. Has received outstanding endorsements from national educators including: Philip Bigler, Director, the Madison Center, James Madison University, and 1998 National Teacher of the Year; Gene Bedley, PTA National Educator of the Year; Donald Draayer, 1990 National Superintendent of the Year; and Terry Hitchcock, Executive Director, The Heroes & Dreams Foundation.
This book was written to answer the need for today's young people to have heroes they can look up to. The people chosen for the biographies are those who overcame adversity to achieve outstanding success. They cover people of all backgrounds and professions, varying from sports people to scientists. It also covers a time period extending over a hundred and fifty years. Some of the people are still living and contributing to society today. As the book is aimed toward young people ages seven and up, the biographies are not long. However, there is an extensive bibiography in the back that may be used to pursue longer works on each person profiled and others like them. Most of the chosen people were familiar to me, but some were not.
The writing is concise and easy to read. The fact that some of the profiled people are still lviing contributes to the relevance of the book. A reader cannot throw down the book because "it's about a bunch of dead people". The book shows that greatness can still be achieved; it is not something limited to the past. It is a great way to introduce youngsters to some great people. | | |
