Ben and Holly have retired to give up city life in Victoria, British Columbia. They’ve moved to a five-acre farm on a small island an hour away. Ben is afire with plans of starting a market garden. Holly’s hope is more simple—to write her stories and fill the new house with cats. Ben hates the idea. Cats, he says, do not improve the profit margin—;but what can you expect from a retired cost accountant?

And so there follows a two-year period of island living, exploring the nature of cats, especially one cat, the imperious George. Ms. Tassie writes entertainingly about the trials and tribulations of a pair of humans enslaved under the royal paws of their cats. The story is filled with small anecdotes of feline sibling rivalry, adventures in cat harness, explorations in the science of upchucking, and the day the persistence of a white Leghorn rooster convinces George to finally use the cat door.

This is a cat book, pure and simple. If you love cats and treasure their idiosyncratic personalities, you’ll enjoy this book. Ms. Tassie proves herself to be a good mild-mannered reporter of catly antics with an occasional foray into the behavior of other creatures, such as a deer-herding dog. However, Cats in Clover lacks a wider plot. Other people drift in and out of the story, mostly as a vehicle for more mildly amusing cat stories. At times this tunnel vision can be a bit irritating, but I always returned to the book to read the next episode.

Don’t expect to find a mystery, a storm, or a tumultuous love affair in Cats in Clover. This is a happy, peaceable flitterhop through life with screwball cats. But as any feline knows, that IS the most important subject on earth.
