| Love and Letters in New England is an accurate presentation of two couples' correspondences in the 1800s. The voice is very academic in its tone, yet it provides wonderful passages that can be used as anecdotal material for those interested in learning or writing about this conflict-ridden time in American history as seen from the standpoint of everyday people.
If you are fascinated by history, the religious and political movements of the 1800s, or the study of human relationships from a past age, this is the book for you. Ms. von Klemperer does not present the letters "as is"; instead, she allows modern readers a chance to immerse themselves in a bit of background in the introduction. The letters are then quoted from liberally in a bed of prose well-seasoned with facts and tidbits and vividly describe scenery gleaned from the four letter writers' diaries, items salvaged from the families' attics, and correspondence from other people.
Love and Letters in New England is well-written, fully annotated, and a virtual treasure trove of historical information. | | |
